I am amazed at people who cannot drive stick, like it's something that is hard to do... why do they have licenses, i don't want them on the road... with that limited brain capacity and all...

Do you really think that knowing how to drive a manual makes you better than someone who doesn't?
Such arrogance

No, i just think that if you are not able to shift manually, you shouldn't have a license... it's not THAT hard.... i don't think it makes me better though... but if you really can't do that, then i think i am a better driver, yes...

erm...not all of us have stick cars on which to learn.

But how hard is IT? push clutch down, change gear, let clutch up while pushing gas.. it is not brain surgery, it is simple enough to do after ONE time...

It's simple enough to do, but not that easy to do well. Learning what you need to do is the easy part. It's getting a feel for the clutch, it's break point, and mastering smooth and roll-less uphill starts that's not so easy.

mmm, reading this thread makes me want to chime in....

About 3 weeks ago my dad got himself a 2001 Celica GT... 5 speed stick of course... meaning I finally have
access to a manual car! My first time out, I stalled a few times like NokiaDude, but now my dad lets me drive
in traffic! I do dislike uphill starts tho, hehe... I always pull out FAST when its my turn to move, for fear of rolling
backwards!(really scary feeling when you see someone pull up INCHES behind you, especially when its not
crowded at all!!! GRR) Oh and let me just say... I dislike 1st gear , and the Celica's stick has too much leeway
between gears(its like a few inches more than most of the cars at the latest Chicago Auto show... 350z mmm, WRX *Homer Simpson's drooling sound*)

Yeah, once you get through your head that you HAVE to push the gas to rev up to 2k+ RPMs to engage first gear it's all easy after that. I was letting out the clucth too much and too fast and not giving the engine enough power. During the "Lesson" he showed me that even if he slammed on the gas and shifted into 1st the weight of the car made the engine do it's work and not blast out of the engine compartment like I thought it would do. :Q But one thing I noticed is that my Dad's 99 Honda Accord's clutch pedal sure does give your hamstrings a work out.

it's not hard at all hell it's not even a cake walk, it's easier then that!, if it requires more then 0% CPU utilization, that person shouldn't drive one.

Over here if you got your drivers license in an auto you are not allowed to drive a manual.

Nobody drives an auto around here (except for old people)

you don't have to push the gas down hard just follow through with the gas. That is the true secret!!! Follow through!

Damn, what is it with you Americans!?

Over here in the UK, about 90% of people learn to drive in a manual. Because quite simply, over here, if you learn in a manual, you can drive an automatic, but if you learn in an automatic, you have to retake your test to be able to drive a manual.

I really don't see why you people don't just learn in a manual, then move to an automatic after you've passed if you want.

Then there'll be much less of these "OMFG I CAN NOW DRIVE STICK PH34R M3!!!!11!!1!1!" posts

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt! Driving manual really isn't that hard. When I learned to drive, I stalled the car on my first attempt. After that: no problems.

No it doesnt make u better but at least u can then drive any car. If u did your license on an automatic car here in Germany you are only allowed to drive autos. And I can clearly see the reason why

You are now a man, my son! When I was taught it was by friends who sucked at teaching. They'd say put it up to 2k and let out the clutch. Well it would often stall. I was dumb and didn't realize that as you let the clutch you have to increase the gas, and they didn't feel free to mention this. My dad finished the training quickly though.

My Dad decided to teach me stick shift after I've been driving around in a 96 Chevrolet Lumina Automatic. So we went to a fairly long road in his 99 Honda Accord and we started at the top of the incline. We switch spots and I started her up. Took the clutch out slowly and let it go on it's own momentum then applied some gas. Stopped and did that about 5 times down the road. Turned around and had to reverse to turn around. Well after 5 stalls I get it backed up enough to turn around. Well we switched places so he could give me a lesson.I finally found the secret, dont be afraid to push that gas down!!! So we switch again. I rev it up to 2k RPM and let out the clutch, NO JERKING !!! YAY!!! So we stop and go and stop and go for about four times up the road shifting retty smoothly. My dad said he had enough and we went home. No for my next lesson, driving stick in traffic!!!
just wait till you are at a stop light on a hill and someone stops a few inches away from you bumber. gotta worry about not rolling into him.. that happened to me and I stalled so many times trying to the the clutch/gas right so I didnt hit the dude behind me.

Easy solution, rev the car up to 5K and drop the clutch I'm sure next time the guy won't stop right behind your bumper

You guys are lucky you got to learn on older cars. In October of last year I walked into the dealership and told them I wanted a 2003 Subaru WRX, manual. 3 days later when the car arrived I drove it off the lot, never having driven stick before. Let me just say the 15 mile ride home was....rough. Learning on a car with AWD is much trickier and 5 months later I'm still getting the hang of it.

Eventually you'll shift smoother than an automatic and you'll get compliments on how good your driving is. Then progress to double clutching, heel - toe work, etc.. if it suits you.

Cheers,
Purg-Z

You've got balls man... I was deciding if I should do that with my brand new truck back in 1995.
