You know some countries don't even know WTF an automatic is... ...and those countries have worse traffic than we do.

Let me just say the 15 mile ride home was....rough. Learning on a car with AWD is much trickier and 5 months later I'm still getting the hang of it.

Eventually you'll shift smoother than an automatic and you'll get compliments on how good your driving is. Then progress to double clutching, heel - toe work, etc.. if it suits you.

at least subarus have their "hill-holder" clutch. a very nice feature.

I remember smacking my mom's manual subaru into my dad's car while i was learning to drive stick....in our driveway.

When did they first get the hill holder?

They've had 'em for a while - I know my mom's '84 (?) wagon had it.

eeek - maybe they don't use it that much anymore:
Hill Holder Clutch: A Subaru exclusive (originally a Studebaker exclusive...). Manual transmission models only. A small rear brake that, after being set by the brake pedal, when the clutch was still depressed the car car would simply not roll down a hill! A very popular feature. On all manual trans. Legacy Ls in the 1990s and many earlier models. There is no hill-holder available with any 2.5L engine (1996 was the first year for the 2.5L) and it was discontinued for the 2000 model. Note: April 2002: hill-holder will be used again on the 03 Forester. This will be the first use in any 2.5L engine.

I learned to drive stick when I bought my 2001 prelude last august. Now I'm never going back to being a lazy automatic driver. And yes I drive in traffic (some of the worst kind). I'm one of those guys who sits in neutral with a HUGE gap between the car in front so I don't have to keep shifting. I'm one of those people you auto drivers love to hate

And nobody here is saying auto drivers a pussies...just the auto drivers that don't take the time to learn a stick.

Ignore them, they are mindless morons who have no ability to evaluate the best tool for situations.

Anyone who gets a LT Truck in a manual is a fuggin fool. Not to mention all the fastest tranny's for drag you hear C4, C6, 727, Powerglide, TH400.... you NEVER hear T-56, ZF-6. The right tool for the right job people, get a clue.

And to the people who think driving a Nissan/Honda/Toyota clutch car is a challenge and makes them a man?? Ahahahaha you are kidding right? those are what a 2" throw from gear to gear, wow you guys are manly
I'm suprised my left leg isn't 2X the size of my right just from the pressure I had to put on the clutch in my 69 just to get it in. These new one's with CMC's are as much as a joke as you "men" are

Heh... actually, I'm 31. My dad taught me to drive when I was 14, on a '69 Opel GT 4-speed.

Hills are really simple if you use your parking brake. When you're stopped, pull it up, move like you normally would, and once you're about to move release it. No worries at all about rolling back..

If you don't know how to drive a stick at least learn. I have two automatic cars but I learned a good while ago.

Do you want to be pointed at too??
*ATOT mob mentality is setting in*

Syringer's method of using the ebrake is a learner's trick... after a while, you don't need it. But then again some people learn stick and still can't drive it for crap after years and years. And then some people learn it overnight...

I do drive to work every day...and I do drive in stop/go traffic..and yes, I do prefer manual. If your left leg can't handle the clutch, work out more.

Or he can keep his Auto, have a higher resale value, have an easier ride home, and be able to eat sloppy hamburgers on the ride home too

Well, depends on the car... in some cars autos actually drive the value DOWN. ie Supra TT or DSMs. Most people don't like sports cars or sports coupes/sedans with autos.

you were lucky

my dad was on the other side of the continent when i started learning, driving school teaches with automatic but i only had a stick-shift so i had to learn that on my own.

pissed off alot of ppl in traffic going 20 mph all the time and stalling

phone conversation with dad:
me: why do i stall everytime i start from stop?
him: you have to downshift back to one before you can start moving again
me: omfg
him: haha you dum@ss

well the words i made up but the gist is right
