Schiller says that AirPods users can expect five hours of playtime, along with 24 hours of recharge supplied by a portable charging case...
AirPods will begin shipping in late October and will cost $159

I thought you were joking but it seems to be really the case. 5 play time and 24 hours charge time. Lol WTF kind of fail is this? Are Apple fanboys really this dumb to buy this?

I have zero issue with Apple getting rid of the headphone jack. I have a much bigger issue with forcing a proprietary connector (lightening) on us.

Not just that. Adding a new proprietary wireless standard.

However I'm at least interested what happens next year. EU has mandated mobile phones must come with 1 standardized charging connector. It doesn't care which one but manufactures must decide together for themselves. It's obvious that all Android phone makers will go with USB-C. I wonder what Apple will do. Separate Phone for EU market? Just ignore EU? Ship with adapter or actually adopt USB-C?

Probably just go with a charger with a USB A port on it (like every charger I own) and let you use whatever cable you want.

Thanks to whoever edited the thread title. I couldn't figure out how to do it after I realized I probably should have used less abrasive wording.

This guy sums it up a lot better than I ever could.

http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/7/12838034/iphone-7-headphone-jack-airpods-rage

Here's an excerpt:

Think of the most obnoxious business suit you’ve ever met and you’ll inevitably picture some Bluetooth dongle jabbed into his ear, pulsing out blue light at you and soaking up grease from his slicked-back hair. Well, Apple’s now got two of them, calling themAirPods, and it’s asking a lofty $159 for the privilege of taking your EarPods wireless.

Of course, Apple’s prettifying the whole concept by obfuscating its use of Bluetooth Low Energy under the branding of a W1 wireless chip while also sexing up the 5-hour battery life by claiming it goes up to 24 hours if you use the accompanying recharging case. Just 15 minutes in the case will get you three hours of listening time! As my colleague Micah Singleton notes, however, "0 minutes in the case gives me unlimited listening time with my wired headphones."

Progress & Courage? Or Profit & Consumerism?

Avoids having competing standards in the post 3.5mm jack era (only iPads and iPhones use Lightening, not even Macbooks use Lightening), USB-C can do both digital or analogue audio over the same connector, and further cements the USB-C plug as the plug of the future. Needing new headphones or dongles is going to suck either way, but USB-C would have softened the blow.
This. If Apple actually cared, USB-C would be used. FFS, none of their laptops have Lightning.
Do they have Lightning to USB-C when you want to use the same Lihhtning headphones for your MacBook?
You NEED two headsets for Apple products now. Their OWN products.
Again...FFS.

Yeah... sorry, but I'm not "courageous" enough to buy two new cars with Bluetooth Audio in them just so I can get Apple's latest phone and be able to use it properly.

I listen to podcasts a lot during my long commute, so I need the ability to plug both the charger cable and the headphone jack to get audio to the aux in port on my car stereo.

I'm sure that someone will make a special dongle to do this soon enough, but I hate carrying around dongles!
Yeah, if you have an old car it sucks, but OTOH, for most people these days they either use Bluetooth or else they just plug the phone in directly via Lightning --> USB, for music.

However, Bluetooth is still nice to have since most modern cars have the Bluetooth handsfree calling option.

To put it another way, when I went shopping for a used car last year, I made it a point not to buy any car before 2012, of the model I was looking for. Why? Because the multimedia features sucked before 2012.

It's not much of a cash grab if the adapter is included in the box. The AirPods are definitely meant as an upsell (hey, you can keep listening while you charge!), but Apple isn't forcing you to get Lightning or Bluetooth headphones.
I disagree, I see the included dongle/adapter as a stopgap measure to keep you going until you get frustrated and fork over the $$$ for airpods. How long will it take the average person to lose the included dongle? I'm generally pretty cautious with my stuff and yet I'm sure that I'd lose it within a few weeks.

I always replace head units on my cars, they come with BT now, I didn't upgrade just for that.

Also, here's TMobile's deal, I have a used 16GB 6s I plan to give them, I got sick of wires years ago and went BT on everything years ago, no way in hell I'll pay for a set of Air Pods for $160 though, LOL:

Starting Friday, Sept. 9, at 12:01 am PT, T-Mobile is offering the 32GB iPhone 7 for free when new or existing customers trade in any model of iPhone 6 or newer. You can also get the 32GB iPhone 7 Plus for $120 with trade-in. And if you’d prefer a 128GB or 256GB model, you can pay $100 or $200, respectively.

There’s some fine print to be aware of with this trade-in offer. Your iPhone 6, 6s, 6 Plus, or 6s Plus must be one that you own, it must turn on, and it can’t be water-logged or have a broken screen. Your new iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus must be purchased with a 24-month finance agreement, and you’ll see monthly bill credits to cancel out the cost of the phone. And if you decide to leave T-Mobile, you’ll need to pay the remaining balance on the phone.

These things always confuse me.24 month finance agreement? Is it free or not? I have a 6 collecting dust. If I give them the 6 does that mean they just give me a 7 for free? I am already a tmo customer.

They charge and then credit you for the same amount for 24 months.

I guess it's a record keeping thing, they had a deal for $100 off the 6s/6s+ last year, and I got 2, freaked me out seeing the charge, but they've always credited me back for the discount.

Rumors were floating around pretty much confirming the removal of the 3.5mm jack, but I didn't want to believe it.

I'm gonna get the iP7, now will it quite possibly be a mistake? Yes.

I'll just use my iP6 for my car (Spotify Premium + Aux cord because my '06 Civic doesn't have USB/Bluetooth/anything other than AUX). Then I'll just pick up a pair of Brainwavz Blu 100 for 40 bucks and use them with my iP7.

It's a hassle, yes, but eventually the average consumer will get used to it. Plus, the brand pretty much sells itself.

One of those cars is a 2007 Mini Cooper, which has the weirdest car radio design of all time. I can only imagine how much a replacement head unit would cost for that car.

I really hope the average consumer doesn't get used to the sound quality you get from a $100 Bluetooth headset. Then again, people are ok with the subpar sound of bluetooth audio streaming in their cars now so I wouldn't be surprised.
