I'm looking for an alternative. My number one requirement is that it not be an in-your-face program. If it pops up it had better be important. In the past MB was good about this, it did it's thing and did not bother the user unless it detected malware, a malicious site or that the DB needed updating and auto update was unsuccessful. Other than that, it left tyou alone and let you do your work. Now, not only is it in-your-face but it's also buggy as hell.

Norton, McGafee, AVAST, AVG, etc are all out of the question because they are all in-your-face.

I know that a lot of people get a warm fuzzy feeling from in-your-face e SW, it makes them feel wanted and important. I'm not like that. I'm a computer minimalist. I want SW to leave me alone so I can do what I use a computer to do.

Yea, this is a rant in addition to to request for recommendations and yea, it will get responses from those who love a warm fuzzy feeling but qwhat the heck, I asked anyway so there.

Just a scanner? Malwarebytes or Sophos Virus Removal Tool. For on demand live scanning Bitdefender Free. Herdprotect works too for scanning, but it doesn't like OpenDNS.

I haven't ever had Malwarebytes "pop up in my face" in any way at all unless I specifically ask it to. If you haven't already, just disable Notifications on the Settings screen.

Agree! Those things are very controllable. MBAM works perfectly for me in 7, 8.1, and, . . . XP!

If you install Malwarebytes Free and don't enable the trial mode, in my experience it doesn't pop-up ever. On v2, there's an option on the main UI window to switch it from trial mode back to free as well.

I used to prefer Spybot when most of my customers were on XP, but it didn't appear to be as effective as MB on newer versions of Windows.

I use Norton 360 and MBAM ... neither one is "in your face" once properly configured.

Mbam and Mbam 2 don't have pop-ups if you disable them in the options. In Mbam 2 go to settings>notifications and disable them.

Whoala your problem is solved, but I guess you are too stupid to figure it out yourself?(no offense meant)

Yes, the new interface is annoying & somewhat non-intuitive, but you can tweak it to be less intrusive in the settings. I like their live monitoring stuff for actively blocking stuff on user's computers who need full Internet access.

OP,

the problem you claim does not exist for me

I occasionally run an updated Malwarebytes scan on a couple old computers that have weaker antivirus like Panda and Avira (weaker compared to the deadly Kaspersky)

never EVER ONCE encountered what you decry

your experience is 4 standard deviations outside the mean

Antivirus programs are crap. They don't work, period. Wait, there is some truth to antivirus programs.. if you are a script kiddie and never heard of Hex editors, you probably could get away with having a virus blocked by some kind of software and its signature database and "smart" heuristics AI. However, the mass-distributed viruses are probably not made by stupid high school kids, anyway. Signature detection and heuristics is crap nowadays. It's all about marketing your product, and it has been..
