Now that my kitty is dying she's so friendly

Sigh. She's in her last days now. Probably a few months left at most. Just sits in my lap most of the time and even licks my face, something she never did before.

So sad.

my cat's getting older, too, and i think about that a lot.

have you taken her to the kitty vet? i guess there's not much you can do, it seems that most older cats seem to die from cancer

Very sadf

It stunk watching my dog limp around during her last weeks. She got cancer as well, and was going from her neck down her right front leg We had tried twice to have it removed, but it kept coming back, so the 3rd time we had her put down when she was suffering too much from it(Wouldn't eat, and didn't want to walk or look up at you).

It's tough, I know, but just think of it as her way of repaying you for the 15 good years you gave her.

Yeah. The vet did a mastectomy and the biopsy came back malignant. The vet told me that that kind of cancer is extremely agressive, so even though they hoped they got the whole thing it probably already spread.

Only a matter of time now.

Yep, my dog I lost in July was the same. I think she knew her time was short and she wanted to be with me 24/7. Putting her down was the hardest thing I've ever had to do

I have a 10 year-old kitty with chronic kidney disease since June and it has definitely changed him as well.

My first cat was put down by my parents because of terrible flesh wounds on both of her heels. She had a skin disease which made healing her skin very slow and tough. So when she just 1 day she tore up both hind feet and for years and years suffered with it. Until we put her down. She was the sweetest.

Cats act sweet when they are about to go because they are thanking you and they love you. And as there companion that is why they show you such love. Cats are very special.

I hadn't had a cat in almost 10 years until my wife talked me into getting 2 from the local humane society last year. One kitten was so sweet and appeared to have a problem around her rear end, but we took her anyway.

Come to find out she was born with an undeveloped anus. Nightly extractions by my wife and I, weekly vet visits for colon cleanings, and a really messy bathroom were part of her care for 4 months. She was so sweet and an amazing cat. In the end, we were faced with multiple surgeries of $3000-$4000+ with only a slim chance that her problem would be fixed and she could live a normal live.

Putting her to sleep was one of the harder things I've had to do.

Cats are pricks and they act like spoiled teenages. But when they realize they won't live forever they want to spend time with those they love before they die. I think this cancer was a wake up call for the cat. It's just sad that the cat didn't return your love earlier in it's life. My advice is just for the two of you to live it up together before the cat's time runs out.....perhaps we could learn something from this cat.

This thread makes me sad. The cat I grew up with was the sweetest cat ever, always following everyone around like a puppy and never aloof or bitchy. He was incredibly in-tune to emotions, too--when someone in the house was upset, without fail he'd find them and insist on purring in their lap until they cheered up.

He was 18, and had developed some sort of intestinal problem that the vet couldn't fix. It was only a matter of time. Unfortunately, my family had a vacation planned shortly thereafter. While we were on vacation we got a call from the person taking care of the house and feeding the cats that she came in one morning to find him curled up on the doormat just inside the front door, waiting for someone to come home--dead.

Sad, sad, sad, indeed. Savor each lick, they are gifts freely given from this beautiful universe.

That's terrible. I think I would've had to off myself to vanquish the guilt.

Some animals know, my mom has a cat that was always growling, hissing and scratching at people who tried to pet it. OUt of the blue she started to have breathing problems, she let me pet her no problem, and was nice to me. Took her to the vet the next morning and she died shortly after. It was weird to have this cat that had been mean as hell to me for 15 years suddently show some affection. Wasn't anything like licking my face or pawing at me. But anyone who knew this cat would be like "wow she let you pet her?"

Funny how a pet turtle, which is a crappy pet if you ask me can and will probably live as long as you. But a cat or dog, 15 years is good, longer is very lucky. Sad the best pets live the shortest amount of time.

my kitty acute kidney failure on nov 13, 2003
she was a two year cancer survivor. although, it may have been a tumor in her thyroid that caused the thyroid problem for which she was being treated, and the treatment had, as a somewhat common side-effect, acute kidney failure. the vet that prescribed it failed to mention that.
i kicked myself a little bit. one of the symptoms of thyroid problems is regular puking, which she had developed at about the same time as the cancer. i thought it was just normal cat puking behavior, otherwise i'd have had the thyroid out at the same time they cut out her cancer. poor kitty.

my kitty also got much friendlier in her old age. she had been one to disappear whenever guests were over, but as she entered her second decade she became an attention whore.

I feel for you and have gone trough the same thing and am going to face it again, unfortunately. I had a tabby live to be 20 years old only to pass away the day after she turned 20....and I was away for classes that morning. Now I've got a Siamese that is 18 and I don't think he's got more than a year or so left in him, either.

Therein lies the trouble with pets......they give love and become so much a part of you and your life, but theirs is such a short existance. Almost seems unfair. But I'll never live without one around.

I am having my cat Peepers, put down this Saturday. She's old, weighs less than 5 pounds now, the vet thinks she has kidney failure. She's been going to the bathroom outside the box. She is half blind. Her fur looks terrible. But when you hold her, she still purrs away, and she rubs on your arm. Still giving you love, even though she is going down hill, I'll never forget her.

Peepers sounds our 20+ year old Calli. She was a young stray when we took her in 20 years ago this 4th of July. She hated men but loved my wife, boys and our elderly dog. She even use to groom Tobby when she got too old to care for herself.

Over the years she has come to accept me as her care giver. I'm now the one she comes to for treats and TV company. She's getting thin and wobbly lately. She can't get on the couch unless I give her a boost. She also looks after our younger cat Pocket-Rocket and makes sure that she gets her treats as well.

After Tobby died I never thought that I would get close to another pet. But this one has my heart and I know I will take it badly whenever her maker calls her home.

I wish you well on your coming loss.

TY FlashG, your Calli sounds like my Peeps. She too was a stray that we adopted, or do they adopt us. She would sit in a plant barrell outside the living room window, and *peep* in the window. That's how she got her name.

Animals have a way of getting under your skin, and into your heart. Take care of Calli, she is lucky to have a owner like you.

they know about each other too, I swear.. we lost a cat about a year and a half ago, one of a pair of cats (littermates) we got at the shelter as 7week old kittens 10 years earlier. he was the cool one and his sister is the weird one. that year before he got sick she got weirder and weirder, really cranky, yet clingy, and sorta mean but she's always been weird and it didn't phase us all that much. then the other one got sick, he had bone cancer in one of his front legs so we had that off, the vet said most of the time that fixes it and cats can live much longer than 10 and recover from losing a limb quite well and it seemed a good idea, otherwise he was in fine health and he did real well with only the three legs but the cancer came back.

and the girl cat just got crankier and crankier. so when we knew the cancer had come back and it was just another matter of time, I got another cat. a 6month old one  that mixed things up some. I had read a magazine thing about cat grief at the vet one of the times I was sittin' there waiting around during all that and it said that I should get ol' crankypuss another cat so she wouldn't be so lonely when the other one died so I did. and she hated that.. hahaha.. she growled for 2 days straight but then she got over it and she stopped biting people and got less cranky and clingy too, it was pretty crazy. it was like she knew possum was going to die, long before we did, and she knew she was going to be lonely and miserable when he did, so she was practicing. then when I got harpo she figured ok, he's kind of the wrong color and seriously insane but at least I won't be lonely.

poor possum though.. he sure was a tough sweet boy. and her supereme crankiness became supremely cranky before we ever knew possum was sick so I'm sure she wasn't so unpleasant purely because she was afraid we were gonna lop her leg off too.

life is sure full of strange experiences.

Wag, you treat that cat good while you can. give her some tuna. she deserves it.
