Different dialects. The written language is the same throughout the country but there are different and distinct regional dialects that would not be able to understand each other. Not everybody is fluent in Mandarin.
i don't understand/read chinese, but that's the greatest reenactment evar. 10x bettar than any Hard Copy/Inside Edition crap. i bet at least 10 chinese slave animators died during its rushed development.
I think this had more to do with education as well. there are so many characters, it just makes it easier for people to learn. and if people are used to have subtitles all the time, it would not be strange anymore.Different dialects. as strange as it may sound, the 'written' form of Cantonese as well as Taiwanese is slightly different too compare to the written form of mandarin.
