Oh deary me the NRA cares about our kids investing millions of dollars. But what for? Is it for books, supplies or other essentials for learning? Of course not. They invested in shooting sports at schools.

While I can see their investment in ROTC training as a positive act, primarily under CSR, the rest not so much. I see this as about influencing young minds to become future supporters of themselves and the gun industry. What do you guys think?

NRA is in it for the money long term. They readily admit it. Public schools should not accept money from them unless it contributes directly to core education curriculum in some way. I.e school supplies, teacher supplies, etc...

I see it as the same approach that dwindling unions are using to retain members. Members are their cash flow and keeping a stable cash flow is a good business principle. Personally I find it appalling and completely inappropriate.

The gunman charged with killing 17 people and injuring 14 others at a Parkland, Florida, high school last month was a part of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s competitive marksmanship team partially funded by the NRA through a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), according to The Associated Press.

Exercising for health and shooting aren't even in the same category of events. One can learn about military style discipline through the ROTC without the use of firearms. This fixation on guns is completely unhealthy.
1. Ever done a 3 gun competition? Ever shot a couple hundred rounds of sporting clays, trap or skeet? I agree no one's ever going to make a work out video around the shooting sports but it's certainly better than sitting in mommy's basement by yourself playing video games.
2. A major part of military discipline, especially in the early training phases, is about firearms. You don't have any business in a ROTC program if you don't want to handle firearms.

"This fixation on guns is completely unhealthy" No, what's unhealthy is an irrational, paralyzing fear of an inanimate object and an obsession with forcing that fear on others in the hope that you can eliminate the source of that fear.

It's not about fear. It's about not wanting an unnecessary harm in the community.

Nope.
Ever shot a couple hundred rounds of sporting clays, trap or skeet?
I tried skeet and quickly found that it was not for me.

The military teaches that weapons are an integral tool required by the job to preserve the lives of service members. Kids can go to weekend drills off campus to handle training rifles for drill and ceremony.

Guns have no business at school unless they are being carried by trained law enforcement. People fixate on many unhealthy things, however, encouraging them to embrace guns or lose funding is ludicrous. I'm not against gun ownership and don't care how many of them you have as its a right under the Constitution but I do want them stored in a responsible manner.

I was in JROTC.
Actual firearms are the last thing needed for a proper JROTC program. If anything, that's extracurricular crap.
Anyone who thinks firearms are integral to a JROTC program are clueless to what the purpose of the programs are.

JROTC progams are about creating good citizens and to help develop character with a little nudge and a wink to visit a recruiter. (Entitled to a pay grade bump at enlistment)
They are not about prepping kids to go fight a war.

Funneling money for trap, clay and skeet shooting?
https://www.olympic.org/shooting

I'm fine with this

Yeah this really doesn't bother me on that level, but it's hard to deny that this isn't like Big Tobacco placing cigarette vending machines in schools. NRA doesn't do it for the sport, they do it for profit, because they are the marketing arm of the Gun Industry, nothing more. The only way to stay relevant and profitable is to insure that your aging customers are replaced by younger customers.

What unnecessary harm is being done?

The military teaches that weapons are an integral tool required by the job to preserve the lives of service members.

The military teaches that weapons are to be used to destroy the enemy. Preserving the lives of of other service members is a benefit derived from that but is not the primary objective

Kids can go to weekend drills off campus to handle training rifles for drill and ceremony..

The can do the same thing before, during and after school right on campus. Happens all the time.

I was in JROTC.

The three programs I've been associated with they were a significant part of the program.
