You voted for this. Get happy with it.

Janet Napolitano earmarked returning vets as potential terrorists. The thought processes that came up with that, can be easily be used to determine that those that play violent video games are a threat also. You are a threat to the state.

Okay, this is how I translate this article - nerds working for the NSA wanted to play World of Warcraft instead of doing their job, so they just told their bosses they were spying on people through the game, but they weren't, they were actually just goofing off playing video games on taxpayer dollars.

I don't really discuss politics anywhere but here. I guess if they wish to verify that I'm a gamer and not organizing some terrorist cell... then... okay? Nice job NSA.

Though I do advocate shutting them down. Perhaps that makes me the biggest threat of all.

Would be funny If they were outted in-game. They would get spammed and trolled and Pwned by legions of players.

I'm guessing they found exactly zero terrorists in WoW. But it's not really about "finding terrorist cells", is it?

As a WOW player, I am as pissed off at the waste of taxpayer resources as I am the invasion of privacy. What in the hell are they accomplishing by this?

WOW players are threats? Really? Jesus these guys are nuts.

I can't believe I'm about to do this, but I'm going to defend the NSA on this one.

If you accept the premise that domestic spying is legal (I do not), team-based online video games are a good vector for communication.

Look at the average dialog for most raids. With some prearranged word substitutions you could discuss the timing of an attack and it would seem like normal in-game communication.

If they're checking WoW for recruitment, I'd agree its a waste but its suited for timing and schedule coordination.

So them collecting record of your phone calls was ok, collecting emails, cellphone calls, them putting spyware on all kinds of computers all over the world was ok, but your World Of Warcraft account is where you draw the line?

Typical liberal: they stepped on something he or she cares about and then the rage flies.

IIRC there were articles years ago stating that suspected terror cells were using online services like WOW and Second Life to congregate and discuss plans precisely because they were unmonitored communications.

Maybe they're going after the gold farmers.

I raid on my rogue (14/14 reg SoO) and pvp on my lock and rogue.

It seems our government is in a perpetual state of fear, like kid who thinks there is a monster under the bed.

I was thinking that was a possible logical motivation, but then I read the article, which talks about them being used for training in real life situations. Then the real horror. Hizbollah hooked up a PS3 controller to a laptop.

That kind of shot down the "logical" for me.

I remember reading on wow forums a few years ago that a few people thought this was happening. nobody had any proof but thought they were.

i seem to recall a terrorist plot discovered and ended because of wow.

At this point I assume that NSA spy on everything I do electronically.

I'd agree. They have the ability to filter through billions of items to get hit lists that they are looking for.

It's messed up and pretty much we are powerless against it other than going off the grid.

There are many that have done just that, and although they are still known by SSN# and the like; their kids and future offspring are not. I wouldn't be surprised if their were uber wealthy families doing this as well.

While not off the grid there was a neighborhood in the mountains (not sure what state). Like a half dozen houses only reachable by helicopter. All very, very wealthy with no desire to be part of the rest of the world...

I'm sure they have the chat logs of all the mmorpgs, and all other games that have a chat window. Why would this surprise anyone? But I dont see why they would go through the trouble of creating a character and actually logging in.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that 'Having To Be The Poor Bastard Who Monitors /trade' is pretty much punishment in and of itself.
