NT Help - Lost Master Boot Record?

The system admin at our office knows less than I do about NT and I need help. I booted my computer this morning and it finds no operating system. I tried to repair NT 4.0, but it tells me that disk is either new or erased or that there is an operating system not compatible with NT. Any chance of getting any data off the hard drive? Most of it is backed up but some recent stuff may have gotten left out.

You could try fdisk /mbr or using an emergency rescue disk. Your best bet to just recover data is probably to hook up the drive to another, working, system and trying to pull files off that way. Otherwise, you'll need data recovery apps like tiramisu and others.

I tried to install it as a slave drive. The BIOS recognizes it as a slave but the operating system (DOS and Windows 95) does not recognize it. The fdisk /mbr command does not seem to be working. Any other suggestions?

If you have a NTFS partition, you'll have to hook it to a working NT machine & grab the files.

Yes, Win9x and DOS cannot read NTFS. Can only read FAT partitions.
If it is NTFS partitioned, you will have to hook the drive up to a working NT machine (Just like the nice person said above)
