hello MDCABC you can find a lot of info Here first you have to decide what type of distributed computing you would like to do.
I like both OGR and RC5 thats just my preferance though.
Welcome to TA and ask anything you want, we will always help!
RC5 rules! Actually, it boils down to preference. The biggest reason I like RC5 is because the numbers are big. Lots and lots of production which equals lots and lots of stats and I REALLY like stats.
we've all got some good stats on the TeAm. seti's GUI may be slightly more user friendly than modding a dnet ini file. adul has a webpage that will generate those automagically, though. personally, i signed in with seti back in 1997 (though the project didn't go live until 1999) and i'm mostly sticking with that. some rc5 on the side, to support the seti cavalry mini team.
Okay, MDCABC, I'm guessing since you haven't replied that you're still confused. You're wondering, "What is Distributed Computing anyway?", right?
actually several of you have sent differnt site adresses and info that I am now reading up on
I am leaning toward the RC5 since I have previously been abducted and presently have a chip lodged in my neck that I communicate back to them with already....so that pretty much eliminates SETI.....j/k...I had it removed.
Really though, as vast as the world(s?) is anything is possible.
Thank you all for your input and suggestions.
Now it's time to figure all this out.
Why do SETI? It only leads to finding aliens that would probably anal probe you for eavesdropping on their conversations. RC5 on the other hand is for real men because chicks dig the stats.
Off course, that's why we have Sandy, WombatWoman, Josephine, GirlFriday, ChrichtonsGirl, freesia39, kassy, RagingBitch, Yo_Ma-Ma, Isla, unexpurg8d and a few other ladies amongst the Borg!
ok I have the client running now
my guess is that when my password is sent then I can join a team?
And anything done before that time w/ go to that team?
If this all works out OK, I have maybe another 8-10 computers in the garage and one more in the house that I could network up to my xDSL and run this on them as well?
After you've flushed some blocks and after the next stats update following that, you'll need to retrieve your password (not automatic anymore). You can head to any stats page, such as this, and enter your eMail address in the search box under participant section.
This will take you to your page, then click the link at the bottom that says send password. After you have your password, head here, and click the link at the bottom that says "I want to join this team".
Regarding the multiple computers, it is no prob.
As long as you have the same email addy in the config of all machines, all blocks will be gathered under one account.
You might want to check the work preference of your client.
Make sure you are doing what project(s) you want.
To do only RC5 you change the work preference string to RC5,OGR=0,DES=0,CSC=0
To do only OGR you change the work preference string to OGR,RC5=0,DES=0,CSC=0
To do RC5, then OGR when you run out of RC5 block, use RC5,OGR,DES=0,CSC=0
To do OGR, then RC5 when you run out of wu's, use OGR,RC5,DES=0,CSC=0
I think by default the client does OGR first.
You have to process one RC5 block before you can flush it. @24 hours after you flush it
(update buffers), you can join a team.
