NTFS a good thing or not ?

I have constant problem with my HD, 1/2 the time i boot my PC, I get a forced scandisk, with many error found.

I asked the guy who sold me the PC and he said it was because of the NTFS file system.

Anyone has the same problem or is the retailer lying ?

I've never seen that problem with NTFS. Even if you shut down wrong Windows wont force you to do a scan disk with NTFS.

NTFS is about 300x better than FAT32 at pretty much everything.

It sounds a lot like a hardware problem to me...either the drive is corrupting files or your cable is pretty bad and the crosstalk from the wires is corrupting the data.

Sounds like your retailer is just trying to put the blame for faulty hardware off on something else. Are you sure you're using NTFS and not FAT32?

What OS are you using? I've never seen the boot-up scandisk run on any computer using NTFS although I have seen it on Win2k/XP using FAT32. If you're using FAT32 and win2k/XP you'd be best off converting it to NTFS (use "convert" on the command line). Check the FAQs, there is one about FAT32 vs. NTFS.

He was quite clear he was running NTFS. The 'boot up' scandisk is there just like for fat volumes...

I don't think it is clear that he/she's using NTFS. Just because "the guy who sold me the PC" says it's a problem with NTFS doesn't mean it is. "The guy" might just be some kid working at compUSA who doesn't really know what he's talking about.

Well, I didn't have much trouble following what he asked. I don't recall him asking how to covert to NTFS, and you suggested that the bootup scan doesn't happen with NTFS. Why don't we wait for PsychoPif to popback in and give more information.

The bootup scandisk also happens in win2k/xp just like in win9x, just not as often.

2k will run a file check on NTFS if it detects a registry problem...

That makes no sense, the registry is seperate from the filesystem.

NT will run chkdsk if the filesystem isn't marked clean and the log isn't flushed.

Ok first is use Win XP Pro
I have a 30 gig HD in NTFS

I need to reinstall everything 2 time since I bought XP. Thanks to XP wonderfull reinstall feature i did'nt need to reinstall all software.
Since you all say that NTFS is way better than Fat32, my guess is that the HD may start to die.
He is 2 years old so that's probably the case, just sad that my retailer won't put it on warranty.
