"NTLDR is missing"

Hi,

I have two hard drives installed. One SATA and one IDE. The OS is on the SATA.

After installing a program I restarted my computer and when it booted back up it said my "KBDUS.dll" file was corrupt.

I replaced that file and windows still won't load. The error is "NTLDR is missing."

I disconnected my IDE drive and windows loads fine. When I reconnect the IDE drive I get the same error message on startup.
Is windows looking for something on my IDE drive for some reason?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the pc is trying to boot off the IDE drive. What's the boot order set to in the bios?

I have the same problem on a friends computer and have resigned my self to the fact that i can't fix it and make it stay so he just has to deal with only one drive. His bios supports both but i can't get it to stay that way.

When he installed his second drive (the one without the OS) did it already have data on it? My second hard drive was brought over from my last computer and it already had data on it. I am formating and reinstalling it right now. I hope it works.

i just had this exact problem when i reinstalled windows on my system drive which is SATA.
the problem was i had 2 IDE drives attached when i was installing windows, instead of just the single SATA. without the IDE drive hooked up it would show that error and not load windows. it made the SATA the boot drive, but picked an IDE for the system drive no matter what i did.
it wasnt until i only had the SATA attached that it would make it the system drive.

I formatted and reinstalled the IDE drive and I don't get the NTLDR error anymore but when it gets to the windows load screen it sits there for a long time and it finally loads to just a black screen. Again, when the IDE drive is disabled, windows loads with no problems.

Any ideas?

Make sure to set in your bios in the boot order, there is a Hard disk boot priority , and put in first place your boot drive.

I had the same problem with my SCSI drive... the ONLY way to get Windows to install and boot properly on anything other than an IDE drive is to connect only the SCSI or SATA drive during install and first boot. That guarantees that the system files and the OS all go on the drive you wish to boot off. After that's said and done, you can plug your IDE drives back in and you should be fine. Try doing a repair install but leave your IDE drive(s) unplugged until after you boot into windows your first time.

Check the jumper setting on your IDE drive.
