edit: Nevermind. Just noticed it's single format. Firmware flash will make mine burn +R @ 8x, just haven't done it yet.

The newest firmware for the DDW-081 makes the drive dual format 8x +/-. This is a great drive. I've been using + media with the BitSetting to - so that it can play in most home DVD players.

Then I got some decent 4x DVD-R Media as mentioned in this thread.

In total here, I'll have about 500 GB of storage for under $150... Not bad, and each additional 500GB will cost $70 or less (Media Price will fall).

Ahh, I can finally retire my trusty CD burner. I remember when 700 megs (or 650 back in the day) was a lot.

8x=12min
16x=7min
bottleneck would be at 8x, most harddrive can't keep up at more then 5mb/sec. in order to burn them at 8x, or 16x, we need really fast harddrive like 160gb or more..

I am looking for another drive, can I get an opinion over this drive and the Pioneer A07. Thanks

5MBps? No drive is that slow! Well, unless you have something uber old (<500MB) old 486 era drive! Eh, I hope you mean 50MBps. IIRC 16X pushes out data at around 21MBps or so. Any reasonably usable HD is still plenty fast for 16x writing.
