hey... was curious to know what are the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear fission? the following is what i came up with..

Advantages:

1) Nuclear Power: efficient and a good alternative to coal which is exhaustible..
2) led to the formation of technology and intrsuments that are used today..

Disadvantages:

1) It resulted in the development of atomic bombs which were dropped in hiroshima and nagasaki.
2) Nuclear reactors can spread radioactivity if proper precautions are not taken thus harming the environment to a certain extent.
3) It results in radioactive waste which needs to be disposed off.

are there any other advantages/disadvantages that i am missing?

thanks

Neg:
It is very expensive.
You have radioactive waste to dispose of.

Pos:
You have depleted uranium to use in various applications, such as ammunition, armor plating, and other stuff I don't know about.
Cheap long term.

Anyone see the plans for a fusion reactor in popular science/mechanincs (can never rember which one it was, I get both) a few months back thats supposed to be active in like 20 some years. Pretty cool stuff.

Another negative is that the discharge of cooling water from reactors can cause thermal pollution.

Also, related to the radioactivity issue, nuclear powerplants are potential targets of terrorism.

Explain this

Some plants are placed on the coast, and discharge hot water into the ocean. That heating of the surrounding waters can affect the local ecosystem.

How many plants? and show the research

Ignorance and baseless fear is the reason why nuclear power isn't used more now than it is.

What are you, his professor and this is his thesis? We're not doing disserations here. If you don't agree with him give some at least mildly believable counter point, or search the net for an answer. This is informal

Every plant needs a body of water to draw from. Sometimes that body of water is artificially made. Either way it effects the ecosystem around it. It's sort of a moot point though, since every kind of power plant in some way effects the ecosystem around it.
