kyutip,
If you are looking for a good deal on the G2, I did the MPSuperstore deal with MSN.
After rebate it is $624 shipped.
I think there were ways to get it cheaper using AMEX Blue at photoalley, but I think those deals are over.
They will take your order on the web and then not process it until they can do the hard sell on accessories.
I played dumb on the accessories and after several attempts, they processed my order.
Camera is supposed to get here today.
I did the MSN deal last year with them on the S100 and had no problems.
The Sony 707 is a great camera.
Really nice lens and great resolution.
Was seriously considering buying it.
The reasons I went with the G2 instead are:
The shape: I would be afraid to take the 707 anywhere without some kind of serious hard carrying case, the G2 can be carryed in a backpack easily.
Memory stick: The largest are 128MB now, and run $100 for lexar brand. Since you will need at least 256MB if you plan to be away from a computer for any extended amount of time, you can add $200 to the cost. 256MB CF for the G2 is available for as low as $70.
Color issues: There was a known issue with the flash that caused Sony to recall unsold units, to update the PROM, this is supposedly why availability is poor now. There is also an issue with the color saturation. It isn't adjustable, and can oversaturate the reds to the point of clipping.
The G2 has it's flaws too:
Autofocus issue: It can be slow to autofocus when using the flash.
Angled line issue: Angled lines can take on a stairstep pattern. This is noticable under high magnification. Not really sure what causes this, and whether Canon can fix it in firmware.
Even with the flaws, both cameras will take incredible pictures.
The Sony has better resolution and lens.
The Canon has better color and amenities.
