Great deal on great camera. Imagine, 5 megapixels for $550. The trick is the stackable gift certificates from 800.com and MSN passport holiday rebates of $100 each. Plus buy w/ Amex Blue and do PM w/ www.a&mphotoworld.com of $729 for max refund of $250 w/ free shipping for $549.95!!!

Here's the math:
$999.95 minus ($100 [800.com gc] + $100 [MSN gc] + $250 [pricematching from AE/Blue] = 549.95.

One caveat though, is the F707 won't be available untill 12/7/01, but at least 800.com tells you this right off the bat and they won't charge amex until item ships.$549.95!!

I might as well ask this since someone is going to...hwo good is this camera??? And gosh nab it if ya didn't know....I forgot the sites I had with digicam reviews. Can someone mind giving them out to me again ? Thx. Looks like a sweet find there. The great thing about the MSN passport deal is that even us newbs can find great deals and post them here (no offense to rycelover of course since I am a newbie myself). Now all I have to do is post one myself...in due time my friends...in due time...

You can find some reviews at the following sites:

www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscf707/
www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/F707/F7A.HTM
www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_f707-review/
www.steves-digicams.com/2001_reviews/f707.html
www.megapixel.net/reviews/sony-f707/f707-review.html

These five sites are the major ones and most respected.

The choices are slim right now w/ respect to 5+ mp cameras - dimage 7, nikon D5000, Fuji 6900Z (actually 3.3 mp w/ 6 mp software interpolation) ... The sony beats these cameras w/o question. Especially at the price I hope to get it for.

Eeek! That's not a camera, that's an assault bazooka. Check out the lens on that momma!

That is a good deal though, if you're into that sort of thing.

That's a sweet camera and a sweeter deal on it. Nice find. If I hadn't just bought a Canon G2, I would strongly consider this or the Minolta Dimage 7. I didn't like the proprietary memory stick Sony uses/invented and the Minolta WAS too highly priced. This is easily one of the top 5 cameras for under $1000, and you've found a way to get it for a little more than half of that.

the canon g2 is a very nice camera as well - pretty good reviews.

FYI: to combat sony, minolta has instant $300 rebate on dimage 7. List at $1299 - $300 = $999.

Ok thx a ton dude for the sites! The one i was referring to in mypost was steves-digicams so it's even better that you included more. What I plan to do is get 2 digicams. One big arse pro type one and one handy dandy pocket sized one. The pocket sized one prolly will be the Canon S110, but I am unsure about this one. God for that price I really shoudl jump on this as an early XMAS present .

One quick question though. Does anybody really need in excess of 5 mp's? In any case I'm checking out the reviews now...thx again.

Why does it seems like deals like this always go south? Like one of the discounts doesnt happen?

Well comparing to this one, mine's not great.. This one focuses a lot better in low light I think.. which a lot of digicams lack, including mine. And plus this is a 5+ megapixels rite?

Yea it's5+ mp do who really needs that?? More rez?? I dunno I'm not camera expert but I was wondering how the DiMage 7 stacks up against this Sony. Not to mention that memory sticks are freakin expensive and thats all it can take. Unless you guys got a hot deal on thoswe too .

BTW, what do you guys think about the mini-cdrw type digital cameras? Wouldn't those be better since the cost woudl be lower to store the media?

Wow, i've wanted this camera since I first saw it, is it just memory stick though, or does it use CF as well? My only qualm is that I thought AMEX nixed the web-based pricematches, don't you need to send in a printed ad now?

Holy smokes, that is one hot price.

Too bad all Sony DigiCam use chewing gum.
Otherwise all my DigiCam would be Sony.

I'm looking forward for good deal on Canon G2 cos I just got 256MB CF for $66 (Dell deal).
Try to get that price for 256MB chewing gum, you'd pay through the nose.

Can you apply the 800.com $100 gc towards the initial purchase of the f707? Cause if not, it would be $649.95 with $100 gc.

No, you can't apply the $100 gc because the authorization code arrives later. Similar to not able to get a free refill w/o getting the cup of coffee first.

By the way, this is a very nice camera. I bought it mid-November @ 800.com.

I will find out what happens w/ AmexBlue w/ pricematching. By the way, that www.a&mphotoworld.com site doesn't work. Anyone have a link? What I have done is checking out cnet.com and do price comparison on their site.

I remember someone posted a msg saying that AMEX Bule won't price match from a web page. If so, you can't price match this sony camera.

kyutip,

If you are looking for a good deal on the G2, I did the MPSuperstore deal with MSN.
After rebate it is $624 shipped.
I think there were ways to get it cheaper using AMEX Blue at photoalley, but I think those deals are over.

They will take your order on the web and then not process it until they can do the hard sell on accessories.
I played dumb on the accessories and after several attempts, they processed my order.
Camera is supposed to get here today.

I did the MSN deal last year with them on the S100 and had no problems.

The Sony 707 is a great camera.
Really nice lens and great resolution.
Was seriously considering buying it.

The reasons I went with the G2 instead are:
The shape: I would be afraid to take the 707 anywhere without some kind of serious hard carrying case, the G2 can be carryed in a backpack easily.
Memory stick: The largest are 128MB now, and run $100 for lexar brand. Since you will need at least 256MB if you plan to be away from a computer for any extended amount of time, you can add $200 to the cost. 256MB CF for the G2 is available for as low as $70.
Color issues: There was a known issue with the flash that caused Sony to recall unsold units, to update the PROM, this is supposedly why availability is poor now. There is also an issue with the color saturation. It isn't adjustable, and can oversaturate the reds to the point of clipping.

The G2 has it's flaws too:
Autofocus issue: It can be slow to autofocus when using the flash.
Angled line issue: Angled lines can take on a stairstep pattern. This is noticable under high magnification. Not really sure what causes this, and whether Canon can fix it in firmware.

Even with the flaws, both cameras will take incredible pictures.
The Sony has better resolution and lens.
The Canon has better color and amenities.
