I think your points are well taken.
I'll say it again though. David was punished, wrong or right. It makes no difference whether he had permission or not. He lost his job.
The punishment must fit the crime. The crime (if there was one committed) here was trivial. The punishment being proposed might possibly fit the bill as "cruel and unusual". (Let's not get into an argument about that -- just my opinion.)
Anyway, I still think things are getting out of hand.
