Sorry to disagree, but the 1.8A runs happily at 140FSB as long as you clock the memory at 1:1. Stable with prime95 for two days. And I am sure that it can go faster, but the memory problem limits it.

If I set the memory multiplier to 3:4, then I have to drop the FSB to a much lower speed (say 115) to get the system stable. The memory speed limit seems to be just below 150MHz DDR, but closer to 140MHz.

And I am using Corsair XMS3000C2, which has supposedly been tested at 185MHz DDR.

And just to support my claims, do a few searches. A number of people have had exactly the same results as mine. There is a serious memory controller problem on the Gigabyte boards, probably a timing issue.

Hi Evan,

as said before, I´d like to stress this:

Greez and thanx in advance

I'd really like to see if you can confirm whether or not there is an incompatibility between Corsair XMS memory at high FSB with the Asus P4B533-V. There have been several reports of the XMS memory not performing well (i.e. not up to the Corsair specified memory speeds) with this board at DDR 366+ and I'd be curious to see if you could reproduce it.

This obviously has relevance for a great many o'cers who prefer Asus boards.

ooops...forgot:

pleaz benchmark the boardz with PC2700, PC3000 and PC3200 (Corsair or others) to get a better feeling, if there is a real speed advantage over the 845E chipset...

As you've probably seen from my posts I have a serious problem with memory overclocking on the GA-8IEXP. IMO the GA-8IGX/P will be the same.

If I were you I would confirm that this MB can run with a high memory speed before parting with your cash - or make sure that you can return it.

Unless you are happy to run slow memory speeds - then the board will be fine!

I was originally tempted to go for RDRAM, and only decided to go for a DDR solution when I saw what people were achieving with DDR. That is why the memory speed is important to me. But the GA-8IEXP just doesn't shape in this respect!

AND: Nobody has refuted what I am saying about the 8IEXP, in spite of a few posts and warnings. Which probably means that nobody has succeeded in running memory fast on the 8IEXP! I will be happy to acknowledge if I am wrong, but this doesn't seem to be the case (so far!).

compare them to an nForce motherboard with the 420D chipset, like the Abit NV7m, while populating both memory banks so dual channel is working.

test both MICRO and FULL versions of the same board......
see if "less stuff" on a board , even though disabled(PCI slots, video, ect)
means faster(something which i personally feel to be true)
lets see if magnetic induction can noticably inhibit performance.

most of us do not need more than 3 pci slots anyway

Thanks for asking

* oc'ability at default & at max vcore
* taking into consideration achievable fsb setting versus memory setting to find the optimal tradeoff for speed for each board
* same as the above for less than the max fsb for those who don't have a "golden" chip (hmmm, maybe a matrix of each of the fsb settings and the max achievable memory setting at these fsb speeds)
* whether the boards have an agp/pci lock
* whether the manufacture sells the board at a higher than stated fsb setting
* how many of the dimm slots can be used when oc'ing
* how different power supplies affect oc'ability for each board
* whether using integrated lan/sound affects oc'ability
* oc'ability for 400MHz (using both 1.6a & 1.8a chips) & 533MHz chips
* the best bios version to use
* oc'ability using stock hs/fan (and not using included thermal pad) versus aftermarket cooling

Are you going to review the Epox 4G4A or 4G4A+ ? I'd like to see that the boards are very popular and i've just bought a 4G4A too lol

I guess I was right about the peripheral power connector!!! It can help you save a few bucks on a power supply until something better comes around. I wonder if anandtech would test that feature with some common PSUs.

?? An additional Peripheral Power Connector *
SL-85MR2-SL/SL-85MR2-L/SL-85MR2 adopts an additional Peripheral Power Connector (the power connector that HDD adopts). Users who installed already an ATX2.03 compliant power supply can use the +12V power Connector designed specially for P4 mainboard. For those who use a non ATX2.03 compliant Power Supply (for example, users that upgrade their mainboards from PIII to P4), they can take advantage of the Peripheral Power connector instead of buying a new P4 Power Supply. This design helps users reduce the cost when upgrade their systems.
* For P4 processors faster than 2GHz, we suggest users adopt the ATX 2.03 compliant Power Supply.

Please buy the mobos from vendors to test them. Motherboard manufaturers can give only the "golden samples" to reviewers.
Also check the actual voltage with and without full load. As others have mentioned, Asus tends to overvolts while Abit/epox undervolt.
As Athlon4all suggested, please find the max fsb limitaion of these boards by using an unlocked cpu. (Also use the same cpu on each of the board to check overclockability.)

Wait! Wait! 3 more plz:
-As mentioned, other chipsets for comparison. My preference: RDRAM.
-Compare overclocked results for above. e.g. 850e at 160fsb, 845g at 160fsb. Overclock, overclock!
-Finally (haven't heard this one yet) memory dividers at fsbs up to 200MHz. x:y doesn't matter (to me) if it's only offered up to 132MHz.

Thanks!

*laughs at the fact hes made the thread turn stupid*

Hmm everything was going so well before. Oh well sorry guys

Again please review the Epox 4G4A+ i'd be interested to see how it compares to other. I've not seen it in many roundups, only individual reviews. Also please consdier the Epox 4G4A when your writing the review, mention it somewhere. Its only about $95 and its the same as the 4G4A+ minus the Raid and Onboard Lan functions.

Just a few, Mark

Could it be possible to use one 1.6a and see how it oc's on each board. Thus we can see which boards oc's the best as from previous threads these p4 northwood overclocking varies mostly on the board. Also it may be nice to get a new stick of true samsung pc3200 and see how each mobo can oc beyond ddr 400.

Even if this request-list doesn't grow any more, it will still take Evan a month just to compile the requests and try to figure out what he can and can't do! :Q

How's just using a magic eight ball? Ask it if the certain motherboard is good, and shake away.

First, please include the Abit BG7 in the tests . Also, I would like to know:

1. Does it have the 4:5 CPU : DRAM ratio (with 133Mhz FSB) ?
2. Stability test with one versus two (or more) populated DIMM banks at DDR333
3. Comparison against i845E (i845E and i845G both with DDR266)
4. Comparison against i850E with different RDRAM flavors
5. Basic benchmark of the Integrated chip against low, mid and high-end video cards. Something like TNT2, GeForce2MX and GeForce4Ti4600 would be great

I hope I am not too late and happy testing !

Can you find out if the Gigabyte 8IGXP is available? Tomshardware review it, but so far it is nowhere to be found. With firewire, USB 2.0, I think this board would be a great 845G board.
