NV 12VHPWR issues revisited

Today I tested whether my 750 PSU (Corsair HX750i) needs urgent replacement for the combination of (undervolted) 13900 + (undervolted) 4090. Running OCCT's PSU test with a 255/253 W CPU power-limit and 418.5 W GPU power-limit says that I can keep the PSU. My CPU runs 40k in CB23 and the GPU over 36k in 3Dmark at these undervolted and power-limited settings.



I also ran Cyberpunk at a full CPU bottleneck, which never happens in practice, and its CPU power usage suggests that no game will ever come close to maxing out CPU power usage. And CP77 seems to be very well multi-threaded already, making good use of the CPU. Switching RT on/off changed fps, but not CPU load.

That might also be the pressure from closing the side-panel against the cable. Even more so, because it not only presses inwards, but also a bit up/downwards (depending on cable-run direction).

The 12V-2x6 power connector is better, but some of Nvidia's AIBs are still using the more thermally sensitive 12VHPWR "H+" connector.

The comments on that Tom's article called into question basically every detail of that article, so I am not taking that as any sort of gospel. It looks like it was written by a new-to-Tom's author.

Regardless, what I stated holds. There are no cases of molten connectors on non-4090 cards any more than would occur on an 8-pin connector.

Even if some cards aren't affected by melting connectors (press X to doubt), NVidia is still treating their 4090 buyers like crap. It's time for people to take their business elsewhere regardless of how much they want to spend on a dGPU.

Incorrect, we've seen several instances of 4080 melting. Also NRF says 4080 connectors commonly snap like 4090.

I've seen only one and another that snapped off (at Northridge channel), no more. I can understand the snapped off one by someone who applied an inordinate amount of force to it. You are saying "several" and "commonly". Have not seen anything that would indicate that.

Actually cannot find a single case of a molten 4080 connector. The broken connector at Northridge fix appears to have been the result of a customer fitting the large card into a tight case with panel pushing against the connector (from the comments in the vid). Thats the only incident of one occurring, no more.

Seems molten 8-pin connectors are more "common" than the this happening to connectors on the 4080.

Again, show me a single repair shop with a constant stream of melted/snapped 8pins like we've seen repeatedly with 12VHPWR. With 21 years' history of millions of connectors to draw from, you should have absolutely no problem doing so.

2 cards, one broken (from fitting into a tight case) and one with the molten pin. Somehow on a further search I could only find the broken connector and missed the other vid. Fair enough, my bad.

So out of thousands of 4080s, the only evidence on the net as it currently stands is 1 molten pin/connector and 1 broken connector from a case panel pressed onto it.

Before you throw your "stop defending a trillion dollar company" schtick as you've done before, realize that ppl often do respond and frame their arguments according to what they may perceive as bullshit. And that was entirely the basis of my response to your exaggeration.

18 Founder's Edition cards, I think it was one burnt pin, most were broken connectors. From the amount of force needing to be applied to fully seat it.

It is being rumored ALL 5 series will require the 16 pin PCIE 6.0 connector. Grains of salt there though. TT and OC3D have pictures of the 4080 supers with dual 8 pin connector soldering points, but chose not to use them. I think Maxsun is only one that uses a dual 8 pin on a 4070ti super, but charges premium for it.

Thing is these connectors are a problem. Think of all the shops that don't post to YouTube, just fix em and be done.

If you have to apply so much pressure to fully seat a connector that it breaks the solder joints and bends it back to an angle. That IS a problem. Design problem.

Reduce the power consumption of the chip, or use 3x8 pin PCIE. why reinvent the wheel?

Now something else did also show up but NOT involving a damaged card or the 12vhpwr connector, but what appears to be a QA issue with a single new 4080 Super 12V2x6 connector which did not fit securely into the card (no click).. Igors Labs looked into it and says it may be a one-off QA manufacturing issue but urges caution to anyone encountering loose fitting connectors.

But I see the cause of your confusion. Its mainly taking click-bait titles in YT vids literally even when they are referring to ONE SINGLE CASE! And ultimately involving a customers mishandling of the card when forcing it into a tight case with panel pressing hard on the connector!

Now out of tens of thousands cards sold this practically amounts to nothing!

Stop pretending you werent aware of the Cable Mod disaster that were causing this. They would not have issued a recall otherwise. How many 4080 molten connectors were there that did not involve the CM adapter?

edit: I see a few. Did not see these in this thread when searching. This was the term I used when googling: rtx 4080 molten adapters. Lot of hits but no actual cases other than one with cable mod. Mostly paranoid ppl asking if its like the 4090.

Still think the 4080 cases are statistically insignificant out of the tens of 1000s sold.
