Pricing in Australia has always been bad. Even when the AUD was at parity with the USD, we would still pay on average 30% more like we did when 1 AUD == 0.7 USD. Someone along the supply chain has been pocketing 30% in pure profit but this could be anywhere along the supply chain.
I purchased a 780 a few months ago and had previously been running a 5870 since 2009 I couldn't be happier. Yes I did pay more that I would in a month or two time, but I have had the card for a few months, so the extra cash I paid is worth not having to wait. Heck my local distributor gave me a pretty good deal on a second 780 since the Ti has been announced so as of today I have two of them.
My last computer (Q9550, 8GB, 5870) lasted over 5 years, so if my new rig (sig below) lasts as long or longer then I will be more than happy.
15 years ago I would upgrade my computer every 2 to 3 years, now it is every 5 to 6 years so a couple of hundred spread over that time period isn't all that much.
It is good that AMD have come out competitive with the 290X to knock nVidia's prices down though. Competition is always a good thing for the consumer.
