You'd better go have your lunch NOW before you wind up spending $500 (plus an order of deep fried fat... er... fries.)
Could you write off that meal as a "business expense"?

why do they want to crush their brand name... they already did that w/ the tnt now they are going to do it w/ GeForce? GeForce stands (to most regular customers) as a quality, high performing vid card. They associate the name w/ great things (much like the way people are like "its a Penitum, it must be better than Athlon&quot. Anyway, i think they need to keep the name and build on it, kinda the way 3dfx does/did w/ VooDoo. There has to be a reason why the VooDoo 3,4,5 actually sold/sell so many units.

bluemax, I just like the word, the way it rolls off the tongue. Say it with me:

McNugget(TM).

I stopped eating those pieces of crap five years ago, and I have my health to show for it. No more air-filled kangaroos dipped in sugar-sauce for me!

"Thats what its going to do with 15 watts of juice flowing through it"

15watts is nothing....remember the v5 6k required a 100watt power supply (brick).

the mx seems more closely related to the original geforce than the geforce 2. codename: nv11, not much higher than nv10. some architectural points seem to be closer to the geforce than the gts. number of pixel pipes, stuff like that. hell, it even performs like a geforce. ultra version of the geforce is what the mx is.

the original geforce was 16 watts. not too many people had power/cooling problems with those. of course no one had the 70 watt p4 in their cases then either.

<< ragie people like you have no imagation and are dull and boring. brand name? what? please... >>

Umm.. people like you obviously dont know anything about brand recognition and what it can do to increase/keep sales when competition gets rough. You think Intel isnt glad they stuck w/ Pentium for so damn long. Also, Nvidia spent a lot of money marketing the GeForce, all that would practically go to waste. I dont think they care if they are boring, as long as they make more money and sales than the competition. Take some business classes before spouting off nonsense...

ragiepew,

That's true to a point. But "nvidia" is also a well-known term. And even if they change the name, they can always plop in a remark like "Volcano, from nvidia, makers of the famous GeForce cards". If a commoner knows "Pentium", he also knows "Intel". The product branding and company name go hand in hand and that may be all that's required.

JellyBaby- You do have a valid point but I (IMHOP) think they need to keep the GeForce name. Nvidia has no where near the amount of experience, brand name recognition, and/or money as Intel does to market a new name. Maybe in the future it would be good to change names, but nvidia is still young and has lots of room to grow. oh well, its a matter of perspective i suppose.

I'm with -> BOBBY RIBS

3dfx stuck with the Voodoo brand name which was a positive two or three years ago but now designates slipshod substandard products. They probably thought they could not afford to change, and it turns out they were right but if they had come out with progressive products a name change would have helped. They at least could have avoided tainting the name of their early success. Nvidia does not have to change names but it is better to clearly define new products to help convince people there really is something new and worth upgrading to.

I'm also with -> BrotherMan

I would like to see Donkey in the name too. How about NitroDonkey? JJ's Dyno-Mite Donkey? Burro Explosionator? Nutron M.U.L.E.? Discombobulator? BlastWave? Oh oh, getting serious now. That would be a good one for Creative to make: "3D Blaster BlastWave 2 Ultra Deluxe With Cheese". Ha. SonicBoom? Well, we will know soon enough when Nvidia registers new domains.

i don't know, i think they may keep the geforce 2 as their "budget" card and and not make a NV20-mx. Why not just call the new card Herbert(TM)?

I say they call the NV20 the Pinto256.

(not a commentary on speed...so don't flame me! )

The Voodooo name is so old, that name recognition is fading fast anyways.

I think reusing the name would be stupid. There is name recognition, but there are other marketing moves other than name recognition. I think most people get tired of seeing the same name rehashed with another number next to it.

nVidia needs to get name recognition on their company name, because that will always stick. But they need to keep doing what they are doing, and coming out with new names every so often. That away people KNOW by the name that it's a new product.

"Hey did you hear about the new nVidia <insert name here>?"
"Yeah, it's not a GeForce, so it must be new!"

And you use marketing qoutes such as "From the makers of the GeForce and TNT series of cards." And "The next generation card from nVidia."

OOOh, then people know it's new, and give people credit. They like imaginative names. And seeing a new name on a box is more satisfying than the same old regurgitated name they've seen a million times.

Business and marketing people are stupid to me. If I ran a company I'd do everything wrong according to them, but I bet I'd be more successful. They rely too much on tactic, and not what the real world can appreciate.

You throw new names at them and they know it's a new product. You market the product, not the name. Then people will learn to respect the company that makes the product, and will value a new product with a new name.

my 2 cents.

The Voodoo name is FAR from old. I mean I tell people I work for 3dfx and they have no idea. Then I say Voodoo and they immediately know. They are like "oh yeah, a friend of mine has a V3 in their system" or something like that.

Problem for them is that the good names have been used. Shockwave is cool but they don't need to get tangled up in a lawsuit with Macromedia. Prolly make up another gay one. I'm still liking GayForce SuperDonkey.
