but the sdr mx beats the sdr geforce 256 in pretty much everything. i'll bet if it had 128 bit ddr it would be faster than a ddr geforce.

brand name recognition is huge. why else does intel keep with the pentium name, even though the latest "pentium" is a septium?!? because you say pentium and people know what the hell you're talking about. theres a reason its taught to every marketing major on the planet. becuase name recognition works. there is a chance that people know the name nvidia. more likely that they know geforce. i also agree that shockwave would be a cool name, but macromedia figured that out a long time ago.

and what shoddy product does 3dfx make? the banshee? the main voodoo line has been excellent since its inception. if anyone has a shoddy product, its all those damned 3rd party nvidia vendors who make nvidia 2D worth about as much as one of thoses mcnuggets mentioned earlier.

I checked the original text one word was missing in the translation!

<< NV20 is REPUTED a completely new design and is not based on the GeForce family. Rumor has it we can expect a similar jump as we saw going from the TNT2 to the GeForce256. One thing seems to be sure, though: The chip will no longer carry the GeForce name. >>

Isn't the NV20 going to be named BombBomb? I know it sounds gay and ridiculous but didn't someone turned on the emu in quake3 and it shows up BombBomb as the codename for nv20?

Ok, the more I said that word, the more I think it not true....

There will be no NV20 MX, the damn thing has 65 million transistors - no way they will get that out the door at the pricing level of current MX's. Heck, the chip itself probably costs as much as does a current MX.

BoomBoom is an internal name NVIDIA uses.. I'm not sure if the specifics are supposed to be public, so I'll leave it at that.

I'd like 3dfx to keep the kinda necromantic/magical names about their products, like banshee, spectre...adds a creepy kinda feel about the product

as for brand name recognition, it really has to do with everything. most of the people i know a while back 'well im ordering this new system, it's a pentium so it ought to be good', our school's advertising ex-service machines and note to promote the 'pentium' part more than any, it really makes the difference to people who couldn't be bothered to read up on the products they're going to buy.

i can't think up of any more names, and no donkeys for christ's sake

G800 next summer? Man they are going to pull another TDFX and be late to party by the time it comes out. It'll be 1 year behind in technology like the V5 is now, Sorry dave but its true dood.

If you think about it, the Voodoo 5 5500 is that far behind in technology. I mean, T&L is practially useless for now, and 3dfx has the better FSAA implementation by quite a long shot. Also, I don't think that the V5 has the desktop image quality problems of the GF2 or the S3TC/DXTC image quality problems of the GF2 in Q3. In fact, it's performance isn't all that bad compared to other cards on the market, and if it had been released when it was supposed to, it would have given the original GeForce a bloody nose...

As for Matrox, they will be worse off than 3dfx IMHO. 3dfx is all about gamers and is for gamers. Matrox caters more to the business user. If they cared anything about us, the G800 would have been released by now. To tell you the truth, I could care less about the G800, b/c it won't be a factor IMHO. By the time it gets here, nVidia will probably be pimping the update to the NV20 and ATi will most certainly be thinking about a Radeon 2 MAXX or something along those lines. I don't know what 3dfx has in store during that time, but it most certainly will NOT be a slouch.

We are down to four contenders for the graphic card crown, 3dfx, ATI, Nvidia, and Imagine Technologies(creators of Kyro). Two remain with traditional 3d architecture and two go with tile-based rendering. Its going to be an interesting showdown

<< The Voodoo name is FAR from old. I mean I tell people I work for 3dfx and they have no idea. Then I say Voodoo and they immediately know. They are like "oh yeah, a friend of mine has a V3 in their system" or something like that. >>

And that might be the reason why nvidia won't use geforce name. They rather promote name their company name than some product name. All board makers will have to mention nvidia in order to relate nv20 to geforce and tnt series.

"I dont think they care if they are boring, as long as they make more money and sales than the competition."

The GeForce name has gone on for a quite a long time. You have the Geforce (sdr), Geforce (ddr), Geforce2 256, Geforce2 MX, Geforce2 Ultra..and etc. What do you want them to do call it the Geforce3? Then the Geforce4? Geforce5? That may cater to the old grandma looking for a Christmas present, but please there is more creativity than rehashing and adding numbers to a name. You sound like everything in this world is based on money. I would be more proud of a company that has innovation and creativity, than just making products and bending over to the marketing people so that I could make more money. I think nvidia does a great job of knowing when to change a product name, the nv20 was just the right time to switch to a new name. It sparks enthusiasm and interest in a new product. Remember the target audience for these cards, people who buy video cards know their sh*t. You do not have to rely on brand name alone to sell, and in fact, it can hurt a product. Just look at the Voodoo brandname. Very dull and uninteresting now. When Intel kept the Pentium name, that is because old folk and the general population who buy computers are not too bright. They just look for that name only. People who upgrade their videos cards are not the same type of people, they are younger and more educated. They know what the exact specs are, and dont just blindly walk into compusa looking for a brandname.
