So i had a spare nv5 silencer and figured i'd try to mount it on my new 7900gt, not exactly sure which rev it is but i figure its the original one.

pic 1
The little plastic "housing" that holds the fan connector needs to be carefully removed, otherwise the heatsink wont sit flush. You also need to connect the fan connector first before installing the heatsink.

pic 2
The metal piece that sits between the expension slots needs to be yanked out, a little twisting and turning should be enough to get it out.

pic 3
The silencer sticks out a bit at the back, no biggie, i just didnt feel like cutting it.

With the stock heatsink i was getting around 47C at idle and upto 70C at full load, with the nv5 im getting around 42C at idle and 55C at full load.

Not really, 560/1680 was the max with the stock heatsink and its the max with this one... wierd.
Also two of the mem chips arent touching the heatsink, some heat tape might solve that.

Great stuff. I think there are a bunch of us wondering if our old Silencers are going to fit the new 7900 GT's

Looking good. Lower temps is always a plus, along with the lower noise. Shame it's not improving OC's.

Was it the Rev. 2 or Rev. 3 NV5 Silencer?

Wow, so the 3rd party HSF didnt help OC's.
That means it's down to the Vmods.

Does anyone know if there are software Vmods for Nvidia cards available?
because I really do not want to tamper with the physical characteristics of the board.

Also, I think the Zalman VF900 may be a better solution then the NV Silencer 5 range.

Well I'd call 450 to 560 a pretty good OC considering i've seen the XFX card that ran at about those speeds as you've said did better in games then the 78GTX512.

Looks like a Rev. 1... The Rev. 2 & 3 include an X-shaped bracket for the rear of the card. Arctic Cooling did this because the bracket prevents you from over tightening the rear lugs. I remember when the Rev. 1 first came out, people were snapping the mounting posts by tightening them the lugs too tightly.

Also, based on:

Also two of the mem chips arent touching the heatsink, some heat tape might solve that.

I am assumiung that the bottom of the sink was completely flat. The rev. 2 & 3 are raised where the RAM chips are to make better contact.

The rev. 1's are quieter though. I think they increased the RPM's on the 2 & 3.

Glad to hear it fits. I'm actually glad to hear it sticks out the back of the case a tad as well. I never was to keen on the gap between the Silencer and the back of the case.

I am surprised how high your temps are... The highest I have seen my stock 7900 GT CO go is 48C, and my case doesn't have the greatest airflow. My 7800 GT Co went to 63C quite easily, so I am happy with the much lower temps on the 7900 series...

Edit: I better do some more testing before I say these are max temps, so take the posted temps with a grain of salt....

Very carefully, i took some needle nose pliers, grabbed it and rocked it side to side. It took a while to get it off this way but i eventually got it off.

Seems like a good deal to me. Just for reference, the NV5 rev. 2 is only $14.95. So if Shabby is using Rev.2 , then A pair of them would be very cheap @ $29.

Rev.3 is only $19.95 as well. Not bad.

I just used a hacksaw to cut about 1/2 an inch off the plastic piece on the NVSilencer rather than screw with my case and it fits perfect now. I also did the volt mod so I'm running at 1.4v, current overclock on my 7900GT is 670/1780. You have to use the NVSilencer 5 Rev. 3, btw ... I don't think the Rev. 2 will fit at all.
