Question Nvidia 1080 GTX SLI getting sluggish?

Hello all,

I have as the title says two geforce GTX 1080 cards in SLI, Quite recently I have been noticing in my games library that the games are not running at the fps they used to. I play a mix of older and some newer games and are finding this in the older titles as well. I have been playing Metal Gear 5 the phantom pain and have gone from the locked 60fps to around 40fps. Just as a test ran Crysis and usually got 144 fps now at 20-40 fps. Could this be a driver issue or hardware and if hardware how can I test?

Specs:
Intel 5960x
Asus Rampage V extreme mainboard
Of course 2 geforce gtx 1080 video cards in SLI
32gb ram

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You do realize that SLI isn't supported by Nvidia or games any longer.

It shouldn't have pulled any support for SLI in drivers for products that fully supported it up to Pascal 1000 series. NVIDIA may have redesigned the control to enable or configure SLI profiles on supporting games.

144 to 20 is (double checks math) less than half. So it's probably not one of your gfx cards failing. But if everything is "basically" working, it feels to me like your PSU might be on its way out and underpowering your cards. Is there anyway you could test that?

What drivers are you running? Perhaps rolling back to older ones would be a good place to start.

4070 Super or 7800 XT would be a decent place to start. Or wait a bit for the new cards coming out, something like a 5070 or RDNA4 equivalent.

Edit: since your whole system is older, the CPU might be a bottleneck for the new GPUs. In this case, maybe just a 6700XT would be a nice buy, if you can find one. What is your budget and would you be willing possibly to upgrade other parts?

IMO always buy all the GPU you can afford. Can always throw on a bunch of IQ stuff if the rest of your system is choking to get more of the load back on the GPU.

Then wait till you can upgrade the rest of your system to let your GPU breathe.

Doesn't hurt to wait a few months if you can to see what the remainder of the 5xxx line and AMD's 9070xt have to offer too.
