I've been stuck with Matrox and 3dfx for the longest time b/c nvidia 2D quality just doesn't cut it for most of my work.

Does any one know of a geforce etc. with nice 2D quality? Even at higher resolutions (1152 x 864 is my favorite)?

ELSA is definately top-notch and has drivers to enhance 2D almost as good as Matrox. (Right up to incrementing refresh rates by 1khz steps.)

I find ELSA's drivers more stable than the Detonator drivers.

Mine's for sale in the forsale thread.

WSPTrooper is just a flame-monger. Ignore him - he simply has no idea what he's talking about.

Read any review of ELSA products and they mention how ELSA went out of their way to not only provide excellent 2D quality, but put in AWESEOME drivers that max out the ability of the card to that of your monitor. To the exact khz. Only ELSA and Matrox do that, AFAIK.

knoahbear, If your seriously looking at a card for 2d i'll recommend the ati 64 vivo. Ive gone from a geforce sdr to a geforce 2 gts and finally to the radeon 64 vivo. Most of what i do is business related with a strategy game here and there so fps is not a concern of mine. the recent 3211 drivers on win2k are great and the 2d is second to none of the geforce cards as a matter of fact its like night and day in comparison to a geforce.

ELSA have one of the best cards in 2D image of the GF2 cards, the GF3 cards however are virtually all good in 2d since Nvidia ask all the companies to use high quality RF filters in the GF3 cards which makes a difference to the 2d image quality.

Mem has a point here. The question is incomplete to begin with as it lacks a definition of what the author means by quality. Try defining quality some time. Anyway, the blurriness in 2d on Nvidia chipset based cards is not a fault of the nVidia chipset, and not present on all brands of cards. Also the rf filter can be removed from these cards to prove that.

Ok, I will relate my own personal experience. I currently own an Elsa Geforce 2 GTS, I never questioned the 2D quality because it was supposedly as good as it gets for the Geforce 2 family. I just recently purchased a Samsung 170T LCD, and I connected it to the Geforce 2 GTS, it appeared to be only slightly better than my current CRT (Samsung 1100p), but not as good as most of the LCDs I've seen. I thought this was kind of strange, but chalked it up to me having connected it via analog instead of digital. Yesterday I picked up a Hercules Prophet III, and connected it to the LCD still using the analog connection, and OH MY GOD THE COLORS, THE CLARITY!!! it was like getting a whole new LCD monitor!

To recap, I think Geforce 2D is total crap, the Geforce 3 has very nice 2D.

"they all" went back? Just how many did you go through?

If it was ONE you may have simply had a bad board. I'm willing to concede that maybe the one ASUS v7100 board I got sucked royally but it was just a bad board. I'll never know until I try another, which I have no reason to do. This ELSA board is at least as good as the Renouned Voodoo5 for 2D, and has the amazing drivers to boot. Combine that with the fact that EVERY reviewer that considered 2D important MARVELLED how good ELSA's was.

You must have just had one bad board, or you set it for a refresh rate higher than your monitor could take. Or you did something wrong.

Maybe wsp figures that if a person pays 200 to 300 dollars for a vid. card the freaking manufacturer wouldnt skimp on cheap 10 cent rf filters on the card in the first place. Then again maybe thats what i think.

Maybe the manufactor thinks that people on a large scale will not notice the bad rf filters, and decided to save the 10cents per item because on a large scale it adds up to alot more profits. They figure techies are only a small portion of the people buying, so its really just the reference board that matters.

Not good for us, but buisiness is buisness

While nVidia's cards can have problems, I seem to have been quite lucky or something. All three boards I've used (MSI, Gainward, Gigabute) have had great 2D image quality. I'm looking at my Gigabyte GTS at 1152 x 864 right now and there's absulutely no problems with it. I tried 1280 x 1200 yesterday and it looked fine as well.

While you're trying out a whole bunch of video cards, try out an ATI or Matrox card...... just to compare.

Yeah, I've tested ATi and Matrox cards before.
Trust me, I'm a quality freak. If something's not right, I notice it very quickly.

I was programming for several hours yesterday using an 8 point courier font and it was extremely readable and easy to see. I had absolutely no gripes with it. (1152 x 864).

I've had the Asus GeForce1 DDR and Creative Geforce2 GTS DDR...Both of them are fine.

However, I recently acquired a Creative GeForce1 DDR...2D ain't so convincing.

I've got a G400 Matrox and V3 3000 at hand...both of them have great 2D quality at 1280x960. I'm using a Mitsubishi 900U Pro monitor, and usualy I tune the resolution high when doing all those damned C/C++ project...so 2D is important.

I would give the crown to Matrox...that G400 I've got is single-head and 16mb only, but still have great 2D.

Tried ATI Rage128 before...not too fond of it, but its 2D is acceptable. Haven't tried Radeon yet since I need the Linux driver...
