im really interested in purchasing the package, but my current monitor is only 60hz. would this display work for the 3d? (lcd tv as computer monitor). i heard that with this monitor you might need to do (dvi -> hdmi) for 1080p resolution...which is ok

second, i have 8800gt's in SLI. i like running my (first person shooters) in 1920 x1080p (mostly high settings)...if i were to get this 3d package, how much of a hit would my graphics take....i.e. would i still be able to play shooters at 1920x1080p at roughtl ~40fps+? (by estimate?)

Very few LCD TVs are actually capable of doing the nV 3D. Most TVs have a "simulated" 120Hz not a true 120Hz so it can't do it. There are some 3D ready DLP TVs available. If it can do 3D there should be a "3D Ready" marking somewhere on the unit or the specs.

Which one?
You'll really have to tell by the specs. Can't really go by just the Hz number.

Features
The principal step-up of the 650U series is the 240Hz effect. The company's literature calls it "ClearScan 240," which "combines 120 frames per second with new advanced backlight scanning systems to create a 240Hz effect." Since most sources are at 60 frames per second, Toshiba's method, also used by Vizio and LG, doubles each frame to get to 120 like a standard 120Hz LCD, while flashing the backlight extremely quickly--much faster than human vision can perceive--to achieve further reduction in blurring. Sony and Samsung, the other two players in the 240Hz game, actually quadruple the original frames to get to 240, and so deserve the "true 240Hz" designation. Toshiba, meanwhile, deserves credit for being careful to call its technology a "240Hz effect" rather than true 240Hz, but we're pretty sure the distinction will be lost on many consumers.

how distinct must it be to get the 3d effect for nvidia 3d?

It has to accept a 120hz signal - not just interpolate a 60hz one to 120hz. Being as an HDMI cable only has enough bandwidth for 60hz at full HD res then it is highly unlikely any TV can do it.

It's not just the refresh rate of 120Hz that is required. My LCD TV is 120Hz but it's not 3D Ready. (No Texas Instruments 3D chip present).

You can have 960Hz refresh rate, but without the "3DReady" option, No 3D Vision. And on top of that, I do believe the TV has to support Dual Link DVI. I'll see if I can possibly get a list from NV of LCD TV's that support 3D Vision. Maybe they have a list on the site as well. I haven't looked lately.
