My new Dell XPS15 has a mini display port and HDMI with Nvidia 525m graphics. My monitor is a 30inch 3007 Dell at 2560X1600. Is there any way to output from the Laptop to this resolution? active cables or something? or is it not possible to get to such a high resolution from these ports?

If your screen supports mini DP or DP, you can do it. If not, try hunting for an active adapter. I don't think HDMI prior to 1.4a supports anything above 1080p.

The monitor has 1 DVI-D connection. has anyone ever used an active adapter they can suggest for display port to DVI-D if that will get me the resolution?

An HDMI to DVI cable or adapter is pretty cheap, so you can try one first to see if it will work. The specs do say the HDMI is 1.4.

exit now, im in the same boat. looking at a xps15 to run my 30"

I'm just getting a mini DP to dual link DVI adapter. Too bad i brought a standard displayport adaptor. Just found out this laptop is mini DP only. :'(

i had an alienware M15X just before this and the display port to DVI-d did not even come close to the resolution, it was less than 1080. i dont remember exactly what it was but it was not very good at all which is why i am posting this to see if anyone has come to a true solution to this. i dont think a simple mini display to dvi-d will do it. 2 years ago on my studio xps 16 the hdmi to dvi-d adapter would only put out the same resolution at the laptop monitor. thanks for looking at this forum.

Did anyone come up with a definitive solution to this problem?
I just bought an XPS 15Z believing it would drive the Dell 3008WFP at 2560X1600 just as the XPS M1730 that it is replacing does, but it does not seem to work.
I researched the GT525M before buying the machine and it supposedly supports the 2560 X1600 resolution. I also confirmed ith the sales staff that it would run an external monitor at this resolution.
But.... no matter what I have done so far, the highest resolution offerred is 1920X1200.
What I have tried so far....
Downloaded latest drivers for both monitor and card (monitor from Dell, Card from NVidia).
Connected via HDMI
Connected via MiniDisplay Port -> MiniDisplay Port To DVI cable (dual link) -> Monitor. (Not sure if this is "Active" or not. I don't know what that means)
Connected via MiniDisplay Port -> VGA Adapter -> Monitor.
Restting resolution via the windows resolution screens
Resetting the resolution via the NVidia control panel.
Setting a Custom Resolution in the NVidia control panel (it gives an error saying that the resolution 2560X1600 @ 60Hz is not supported by the monitor).
The only other connection option is MiniDisplay Port -> Display port, but I don't want to go out hunting for another cable given that I have already bought every cable known to man or beast witout getting a result.
I am lost and about to return the machine. The sales staff told me it would run the monitor no problem.

Mini Diplayport -> Displayport is your only option at this point, it should work, the cable shouldn't be very expensive, and you really should have started with this cable. The mini Displayport->DVI you got must have been passive and the port is only single link. VGA does not support 2560x1600, and I guess the HDMI out on that particular laptop can't either.
