Money not being the issue here, which should I go for because I know that NVidia has had problems with DX9 in the past but now they are said to be over. Which is better?

Oh....my.....god.....!!

Well, if you need a card NOW, get the Radeon 9800 Pro/XT, if you can wait a month or so, wait and see how good the R420 is before making any decisions, as the 6800 isn't available to buy ANYWHERE.

lol...

If money is not an issue; I would buy the 9800xt now, a 6800 after that, and then a RV420 afterwards just for keep sakes and good meassures.

But in terms of performance, the newer generation 6800. That's if you don't want to wait and see what the RV420 has to offer from ATI.

Like the others said if u need it NOW go grab an XT if you can wait a month or so get a 6800 U if you can wait a month to see how the R420 performs and if its better it will be another month on top of that for it to hit shelves.

So it is up to when you NEED that card I belive.

9800 XT - NOW
6800 U - 1 Month

if the R420 is better than the 6800U

R420 - 2 months

Hard to say actaully if the R420 will be any faster than the 6800 ultra.....Actually you might find the reveiw at Hexus.net a eye opener.........They compared the 6800 ultra and the 9800XT(r360) with FSAA and AF..

www.hexus.net..

No doubt at 1024 x 768 with no FSAA an no AF, the 6800 ultra owns the 9800Xt...

From 4x FSAA 8x AF.....the 9800 xt still losses...but once at 6x FSAA and 16x AF...the 9800 wills out right.....thats with a architecuture that has 13GB less memory bandwidth and half the number of pipelines..

The thing about this is I think NV40 goes after is high performance at HIGH resolutions with 1600x 1200 res there is no real need for AA really anyways though 4xAA still looks real good and performs well in a few games. High res = much better looking than high AA anyday. Besides I don't think I have ever seen anyone use 6x or 8x either. So I don't really see a problem here.

Here are the benches to which he is referring. NV40 suffers once supersampling is enabled:

Ya, those are the only "good" previews/reviews of the new card even though they are counter to the other 80% seen in the past few days

When the new NV specs started leaking at 1st the forum(s) were flooded with, "...no way, this is wrong, that can't be.." etc, now it's, "...well 8 or more reviwers say it's OK, but you should discount it in light of the 2 who don't.."
SOS whenever its NV, Intel or MS.

It's really getting tough for the newer, say maybe uniformed people looking for recommendations because of all the FUD-I'd caution any1 looking for info on any piece of hw to read all the stuff themselves and if 80% of the product reviews show 1 side and 20% the other then also check out the historical"slant" those sites (and for that matter the forum posters who are giving thier nods out)
have traditionally had.

hmmm looks like HardOCP had obtained more details about the 800XT...

I would wait ..
....the next refresh of the NV40......may be the the 6850 Ultra ?(guess)....I think the NV 40 can at clocked to at 500 MHz using the current manufacturing techniques used at IBM......(the are most likely fabbed in the IBM plant in NY).

As for 800XT...HardOCP says that it will have twice as many pipelines over the current 9800XT.....64% more memory bandwidth....and also 45% higher clock speeds....

The link is here.... http://www.hardocp.com/image.html?image=MTA4MTgxOTA5NXhEeE5HbnF3RzFfMV8xX2wuZ2lm

Also, don't expect any 512MB cards any time soon.......not at the current memory prices......

Not a fair comparision I think...we'll have to see what ATI has to offer to compete with the 6800 pro.

Confused

The only place I saw them available was in a prebuilt Alienware... at a premium price. The retail ATI & Nvidia next gen cards should be available on April 26.

So they are doubling the size of the chip, and increasing the clockspeed dramatically. Lets see how their cooling solution looks and what the fanbois cry about next.

Here is my guess on ATI X800XT and X800 Pro's Performance....

X800 Pro, would score around 10.5 to 11K in 3Dmark2003
X800 XT would score around 16K in 3D mark 2003...

Of course these are just my estimates.........I guess I will find out if i am correct on the 24th...

My guess:

The X800 Pro looks like a 9800 with 4 more pipes and a higher clock so I'm gonna guess 9 - 10k in 3dm03 on a 3.4/3400+ system
The XT with twice the pipes and a 600 mhz core I'll estimate at 12 - 13k

Basically, I think the next gen cards are going to be surprisingly close in performance with the lead switching on a per/game basis.

With the heat coming out of current 9800's I'm surprised at that chart, 450 sounds reasonable, 500 too, but 600 mhz on the .13 micron... I'll be impressed. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the 9600's on a .09 micron process and maxed at 500 atm?

The 6800 Ultra blows the 9800XT out of the water. In fact, it blows EVERYTHING out of the water.

No. RV360 is .13mu with Low-K. The 9600XT is clocked at 600Mhz with LOTS of OC potential, so I hear.

If this isn't a troll then all I can say is that the original poster has a lot of research to do.
