I don't see how given ATi is pumping out monthly official drivers while nVidia's last official driver was released in December 2005.

Website shows 81.98 Feb 7th. And 84.15 is up as of yesterday.

But I agree that they should update more often than they do. And fix well-known problems that have been around for a long time.

That's when it received WHQL certification and was reposted with the new date. The initial post date was December 2005.

And 84.15 is up as of yesterday.
Sorry, I missed that one. Their main page still links to 81.98.

Off to install now.

My average FEAR FPS @ 1280x960 4xaa16xaf everything max went from 52 to 65 with the 84.20's. I was using 81.98 before. The release notes state the improvement is for FEAR with AA enabled. It doesn't mention if any other games with AA are improved. It would be nice to have an across-the-board improvement with AA on.

It wasn't even worth playing the first time.

yeah it was nominated for game of the year based on its crappiness

I played it all the way through, which says more than i did for HL2, D3 or FarCry

everyone have their own preference i guess, fear was okay for me since everything looks so dull

and the game was pretty easy too (even at the hardest difficulty), especially with the slow motion

Summary of what?
The only thing that matters is:
Xtream-G Drivers > Nvidia Drivers
(better IQ, better performance, etc.)

And for performance with the driver? I really could care less. As long as everyone says it performs good, I'll download it and use it. Simple as that. I really don't care about a ~40% fps increase in FEAR (I don't play it...anymore).

Just a quick question, I downloaded this driver, but found it strange that it was a little less than 11 MB...past drivers I've gotten (81.95, 81.98) were about 20 MB...is this right?? It seems kind of small to me, but every driver is different I suppose. Just wanted to know if I got the right one before I clean out the 81.98, so let me know!!! Thanks in advance.

I've finally gotten around to giving 84.20 a good workout (Extreme-G version), and all I can say is the IQ is mind-blowingly good with these drivers and the performance is absolutely top notch. These drivers absolutely transformed how farcry looks (and I've posted sample pics of farcry with 83.90 in previous threads). Haven't had a bad experience with them yet other than the ongoing blacked out Luna problem and no swimmer in Abba Zabba's vertex displacement demo). I think the ATi supporters good old "ATi has superior IQ" standby excuse is in serious trouble going by what I saw in Farcry and the firingsquad comparison screenies Dug777 posted some time back...

It was always assumed ATI had the lead due to better shader performance.

Which in terms of raw computational power has always been a flawed assumption. People are going to think what they like, but the available compuational ability of all of the ALUs utilized in fragment shaders on the market today is available in detailed documentation- the big edge in terms of raw power is PR, not engineering. That said, ATi seems to have much better hardware to deal with conditional branching- just there aren't any games that use conditional branching nor are too many on the horizon outside of console ports(which is a shame as it can be quite useful if implemented properly).

The FEAR rift in performance was almost certainly kept in place by nVidia so they could unleash a new driver with a big performance boost to coincide with the launch of their new parts. Maybe some of the newer guys on the boards might not realize it, but that is patently nV.

Oh yes, nVIDIA's fear performance is great on nV40 too, it's not just a G70/71 type thing (and no, IQ isn't being sacrificed for performance - both IQ *and* speed have considerably improved).

been using these for the past few days of playin fear(sp), quake4(mp),doom3,and vampire bloodlines and there is not only some nice visual improvements in all these games,.. but performance is also noticeable right away.

nvidia releases drivers all the time,(way more than once a month and they are kinda "slipped" out ).. they just arent always slapped on nvidia.com main driver page,.. i have also found most of the "official whql" drivers ,.. are the "noob proof" versions,...81.98 was a piss poor driver imo performance wise,.. yet 82.12 beta was superb and started to show image quality improvements and performance gains and never became "official whql",..and 84.20 is beta and 84.15 is official? yet released on the same day huh ...gotta read between the lines there,.lol

A dump question: What differences between the 81.98 drivers and 84.20 ones? Aren't they the same? Someone please enlighten me on this

i dont like these drivers...and here is why.

I install them...i run the Demo version of 3dmark05... i like running it because it really checks stability. After it was finished i checked my cards temperature graphs....

the card had hit 71C If you ask me this is too hot. I want my card to last a long time..im not a rich fanboy that can buy a gtx when i blow up my gt. So I reinstall nvidia's standard top end drivers... I run the same scenario....after its finished i check the temp graph...

never gets above 65C. I have the card thats overclocked from the factory from EVGA. I break 7500+ in 3dmark 05 so 40 marks i do not care for. In games I did not try fear...nor did I bother to turn fraps on during the short time the drivers were installed...I didn't particularly notice anything...but I would not keep those drivers even if I did. I'll be happy with my slightly slower safely cooler standard drivers for now.

I wish my card would run as cool as 71C at load

Not at all, I've still got a 6800GT. About 60C/90C idle/load

Lots of 6-series cards run quite hot (and the 7-series don't)...I'm not sure I really see the humor in it though? I never get any crashes or artifacts, and this is with an HDTV tuner 2mm away from the video card, so honestly I don't care...I'm not going to fret over temperatures when the card's been running fine since 2004.
