i dont like these drivers...and here is why.

I install them...i run the Demo version of 3dmark05... i like running it because it really checks stability. After it was finished i checked my cards temperature graphs....

the card had hit 71C If you ask me this is too hot. I want my card to last a long time..im not a rich fanboy that can buy a gtx when i blow up my gt. So I reinstall nvidia's standard top end drivers... I run the same scenario....after its finished i check the temp graph...

never gets above 65C. I have the card thats overclocked from the factory from EVGA. I break 7500+ in 3dmark 05 so 40 marks i do not care for. In games I did not try fear...nor did I bother to turn fraps on during the short time the drivers were installed...I didn't particularly notice anything...but I would not keep those drivers even if I did. I'll be happy with my slightly slower safely cooler standard drivers for now.

I wish my card would run as cool as 71C at load

thats all a joke right?

Not at all, I've still got a 6800GT. About 60C/90C idle/load

holy crap man! 90c load?!,.. do you live on a sidestreet right off of HELL er.?..lol j/k

3 hours of quake4 MP gets me 68-67c(gpu 1 & 2) full load from both cards together,.. wow you guys just made my day

Lots of 6-series cards run quite hot (and the 7-series don't)...I'm not sure I really see the humor in it though? I never get any crashes or artifacts, and this is with an HDTV tuner 2mm away from the video card, so honestly I don't care...I'm not going to fret over temperatures when the card's been running fine since 2004.

the only reason i can reference 6800 temps is because i went from a 6800GT(on 6800 release) to these cards(on 7800 release,..and im sure this fall ill be converting again if the gains are high enough depending on M2) your temps are quite a bit higher than my GT was,.. but i wasnt sayin your cards are literally hot like they are in hell,.. or that your evil and belong near hell,..lol..or anything of the sort ..wasnt really ment to be taken that serious i guess is what im sayin

i tested these drivers vs. modded 84.12 drivers, and the modded ones beat them by 4 FPS average in FEAR. they get 7FPS higher max.

Well then get the modded 84.20's and try it again.

75 degrees celcius is nothing for the Geforce 6/7 series - the core slowdown threshold is 120 degrees celcius. The card will work for many years to come @ 70. If you are worried about heat ensure your case is well ventilated - I have a quiet 120mm fan blowing air over my video card. You may also want to install a better heatsink if you only have a single slot cooler on the card. The fantastic heatsink on my Leadtek 6800GT was a major factor in it's purchase.

There is a world of difference between the two drivers. Just try 81.98, then 84.20 and you'll see. You could also try reading the release notes for each driver.

81.98 was just all round ******.

I don't see how given ATi is pumping out monthly official drivers while nVidia's last official driver was released in December 2005.

nVidia need to stop hiring AEG agent and start releasing more frequent official drivers.

And BFG10K needs to stop making inane comments (beta drivers wrecked my 6800U!!!) about nVIDIA's beta drivers...

It's funny, even though I don't get many BSODs anymore every game I play errors to desktop after a few minutes of play . . .

Ya, im not sure why FEAR is so highly held, it is a decent game, with no replayability and bad multiplayer

I never made that comment. In fact IIRC you were the one that insinuated something along along those lines.

In the meantime I'm still trying to understand why it's taking so long for nVidia to put the 84.20 drivers on their main page.

The webpage is there, but not connected to the driver selector boxes and the driver itself isn't present.

Yeah and they have changed the driver link back to 81.98. You can still go to the 84.15 link but of course you can't download.

I wondering what's going on, it's obvious that they have the drivers, but they are just not releasing them . . .

note the word "slowdown". It will take far more than 120 degrees celcius to actually kill the core.

"core slowdown threshold" is taken literally from the nVIDIA control panel temperature page.

I'm not meaning to start any long debate or anything. But interesting point about core slowdown threshhold points.
On my X1900 XTX, at around the 70-85 degree temps I would definately start seeing big drops in my fps.
It would be rather annoying as I would start say, COD2 and I'd be getting pretty high frames, but I could gradually see the average dipping from 50fps to say around 40 or less, even in the same levels and areas where I was just getting 50. I can only assume this was because of temps, I would put my hand on the back on the case, and the heat would be ridiculous.
Almost scary

or u can just do what i did and buy an accelro x1... my temps dropped from an average of 85c under load TO 50C UNDER LOAD. yes i was shocked as a mofo too. it's single slot and quieter than a mouse humping a ball of cotton. I LITERALLY had to check the fan to ensure it was on, and i still can't believe the temp monitor saying it's only 33c idle. :0

That said, ATi seems to have much better hardware to deal with conditional branching- just there aren't any games that use conditional branching nor are too many on the horizon outside of console ports(which is a shame as it can be quite useful if implemented properly).

The FEAR rift in performance was almost certainly kept in place by nVidia so they could unleash a new driver with a big performance boost to coincide with the launch of their new parts. Maybe some of the newer guys on the boards might not realize it, but that is patently nV.

Theyve been doing it since the Geforce 256

<3 detonator updates from back in the day on the Geforce 2 GTS launch

Reseating my cooler and applying AS5 got my temps from 60/89 down to 51/81

might wanna try it for a cheap fix.

Took me all of 20 minutes to do.

The 84.20 is the best driver currently. Better than the 81.98 or the 84.12 . . .
