nvidia and XP installation problems

I've seen several semi-similar threads of people
reporting problems with WinXP and nvidia based cards, but
none of the suggestions so far have helped. Here is my
problem (BTW my system info is at the bottom):

When I try to install either my old GeForce1 card or my
new GeForce3 ti200 based card, the hardware wizard
detects my new card, then loads the default windows
nvidia drivers. Everything is fine so far. Before I
reboot (after several trials of doing so immediately to
no avail), I check the device manager and listed is the
correct video card AND my monitor. If I try to use any
DirectX 8.X games, Windows media player, or anything it
works fine, all BEFORE rebooting. Then I go ahead and
reboot, when it completes I find that my monitor is now
listed as "{Default Monitor} on Geforce3 ti 200 DDR."
Additionally, in device manager the monitor icon/section
is no longer listed at all, let alone my monitor's
name/description as it had before reboot. And now in
display properties under the monitor tab, it's listed
as "default monitor" and the properties tab is no longer
functional and is greyed (or rather tanned) out. And all
those programs that worked before rebooting now cause my
computer to crash with vertical basic colored lines or
splotches, or cause my monitor to go black and display
some funky "Out of Sync" error message to be displayed on
my monitor and loop from one Hz setting to another while
the monitor's power switch is amber colored instead of
the normal functioning green. The directX8.1 diagnostic
program (ddiag.exe) also crashes during it's
initialization. So I can't play any games, multimedia
videos (unless played through my MPEG decoder card),
etc. This pretty much sucks....

I have tried every nVidia XP driver I can find and still
this happens. To change drivers I simply uninstalled the device/driver in device manager and then used the update
driver selection or ran the nvidia install program I
downloaded without doing anything else(I'm not sure if
this is correct procedure or not under XP, could this be
a reason???):
Gainward's install drivers
nvidia 23.11
nvidia 21.83
nvidia 12.41
XP's default nvidia drivers

Maybe I'm just so damn frustrated that these new
components/OS (I just installed XP Home, and I am not
exactly as familiar with it as i was with Win98) don't
work while win98 worked just fine, and I'm missing
something simple.... ARRRGH I hope someone can help...

System Info:
WinXP Home
128 MB SDRAM
Celeron 500MHz
Aopen AX6BCPro (Intel 440BX chipset)- with the newest
BIOS installed
Gainward Geforce3 ti 200 or a Creative Labs Annhilator
Pro (Geforce1 card)
Samsung SyncMaster 700pPlus plug and play monitor (there
are no drivers for this monitor on Samsung's site for XP)
Soundblaster Live!
Real Magic HollywoodPlus MPEG decoder card

Extremely frustrated..... i hope some kind, patient soul
can help...

Check your IRQ and make sure nvidia is only one that occupy irq 11.
If it thats not the problem then try the windows update and update with nvidia driver after reboot try to install latest driver.

128 Mb sd ram and a cel. 500 Mhz running XP is a very bad idea, I would think about upgrading or installing a new OS! XP just needs power!

You should be able to use Win2K monitor drivers, I did for my LG monitor with WinXP with no problems, also try setting the refresh rate manually before reboot under the monitor section tab.
