Simple fact is why would'nt nvidia release fermi as soon as possible to match ati 59xx or 58xx cards ? ,here is why because nvidia is still perfecting there card ,amd already has perfected it with more to come ,so as soon as nvidia release there new fermi amd just have to change a die setting on the press and looky looky here is a new amd card again bigger better than there 5970 within a few short weeks not months like nvidia .
if you were working for yourself would you bring out a new product that was behind the others ?no i didnt think so why waste your money,
so how is nvidia going to catch amd?
it has to be good

Smells of failure? This is complete failure already. In the bleeding edge world of gpu's you're 6 months behind your competitor, you got that Jackass of a c.e.o. holding up a wooden mock up of fermi (pretending it's real), and now the big announcement is an announcement of an announcement.

Thats being optimistic. I think its an announcement of an announcement of an announcement of an announcement and thats if everything goes well.

Still no benches ?! Nothing ?

It's a good thing PC gaming has currently plateaued in its hardware demands, as 5870CF / 5970 can run anything maxed at 2560x1600.

I don't even need to consider throwing money at whatever late to dinner offering nv is eventually going to bring out. Pretty sad state of affairs from nvidia, announcing they will be making an announcement.

I want to know how they are going to respond to ATI releasing the 6 series at the end of this year. They're in pretty dire straits.

Seems they updated their facebook page. Now it's an official launch date instead of just an announcment.

Either their PR department screwed up bad making the announcment or they had to move up the launch date because of the negative reaction to an announcment to an announcment.

Nvidia FAIL, an annoucement for an annoucement, they could have at least released the specs, pricing info, or something. Not even a tidbit of information, I hope at least these new Nvidia cards blow everything away and are affordable at least.

Why is there a marketing trend in everything these days of announcing that they will have an announcement.....it's got to one of the most annoying new marketing ploys ever.

"PREPARE FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN ON xx/xx!!!", day comes, "PREPARE FOR US TO ANNOUNCE SOMETHING soon!"

charlie could have been right ,but it isnt just the videocard that is broken ? it could be nvidia as a whole ?,come on you guys if your product could compete you would have it out there and making money of it ,that boys is a fact.
I would not buy shares in any company that did business this way ,ask yourself how would your share grow in value ,they wouldnt ,that also is a fact

Charlie has repeatedly pointed out Nvidia, as a company, is major dysfunctional, starting with JHH.

Depending heavily on the element of luck for the success of your new generation of cards, which is exactly what JHH did, is a recipe for potential disaster, in this case fully realized, and a clear sign of broken management -> broken company.

It's to generate Hype. The longer they convince people to hold off buying ATI is a win for Nvidia. The longer they can spin things out and sew the seeds of doubt in prospective ATI 5xxx series buyers is a win.

You would think with such a killer card that Nvidia would have released some benchmarks by now....

I have a feeling Fermi will be an awesome architecture, but the benefits will be even more delayed than ATI's Cypress (which is DX11, but apparently lower in tessellation capabilities).

What we need Nvidia to do is sponsor games utilizing heavy tessellation in the programming. This would probably make gamers much happier than including GPU based Physx.

There could be tons of reasons for that like:
their drivers still need tons of work. (Seems likely if Charlie is to be believed about the ungine benchmark problems).
They still don't know what speed to clock their cards at so they can't benchmark.
The performance isn't that much greater, and thus they don't want people buying ATI cards instead of waiting.

Without some reason I think something would have been leaked by now like with their other cards we'd usually see someone post initial reviews and photos on a Chinese site.
I'd give it another 2 weeks max. If nothing is seen by then availablity must be truly horrendous so no one could sneak a card early.

Please nV, start competing again sometime this year.

My gf 2, 3, 4200, 5900, 6800 and 7900 all hang their heads in shame while the schoolkids point and laugh. It's been almost two years now of ATI stealing their lunch money

Now all AMD has to do is drop prices around the middle of march and kill any hopes that Nvidia has of making any money on Fermi.

Nvidia is probably trying to figure out how to power the graphics card AND the water cooling system you'll need so you can run it at speeds high enough to compete with the 5870.

rumors of nvidia's demise have been greatly exaggerated. are they getting their asses kicked for the past 6 mos? yes. but for the previous 15 mos they were a little better than amd, and for the previous 2 years before that they absolutely obliterated daamit. plus, the 40nm production problems at tsmc have limited the actual number of cards sold over the past 6 mos, further reducing nvidia's damage. Nvidia has so much mind share that even if fermi ends up being a true 2900xt clone their many fans will just take a pass to the next gen and see what rolls out.

Good point. Still I hope ATI catches up with Nvidia for everyone's sake. Nvidia having so much more market share than ATI has probably contributed to Nvidia's shady business practices over the last few years. The best thing for all of us would be if they were both nearly equal and firecely competing with each other. The last six months have been good for us as ATI is now catching up but TSMC problems mean they still haven't caught up enough, according to stats like the Steam hardware survey, Nvidia is still miles ahead.

Some of you guys really should consider prozac.

Seriously though, you have something today that you didn't have yesterday. A launch date.

It's hard to get excited about a date when you don't actually know anything concrete about anything that actually matters regarding the cards

Combine that with JHH's own comments below, and we have a launch date, with no useful information about the product being launched, and a suggestion that the cards may not be available or at least available at anywhere near RRP until at least May onwards.

Which would suggest for me that either a sensibly priced Fermi or a competition 'price-reduced' 5850 (or heck, 5870 if fermi is THAT good) won't be around for my enjoyment for quite a long time (presuming Fermi is all that or at least very competitively priced)...

Bit of a fizzer really

“Q2 [of FY 2011] is going to be the quarter when Fermi is hitting the full stride. It will not just be one Fermi product, there will be a couple of Fermi products to span many different price ranges, but also the Fermi products will span GeForce Quadro and Tesla. So, we are going to be ramping now on Fermi architecture products through Q2 and we are building a lot of it. I am really excited about the upcoming launch of Fermi and I think it will more than offset the seasonality that we usually see in Q2,”

I don't being to understand your financial year calendar, but apparently: 'Nvidia’s first quarter of fiscal year 2011 began on the 31st of January, 2010, and will likely end on the 30th of April, 2010; the Q2 of FY 2011 will last from May till late July, 2010.'

Just putting a little perspective out there for people. Remember last year this time when nV was competitive at each price bracket? They doubled their revenue this year in the quarter that just ended a couple of weeks ago and improved their profit/loss by over a quarter of a billion dollars. Their gross margins have also increased by 15%.

Here are AMD's numbers to compare-

http://www.amd.com/us/press-releases/Pages/q4-earnings-2010jan21.aspx

In summation, nVidia had higher gross profits then the ATi division had in total sales- that is what is happening with nV being a no show at the high end, having EoLd everything above the ~$130 price point and, if you believe the hype on some sites, about to go out of business.

As much as people on tech forums and even some tech sites like to talk about ATi's clearly 'superior' approach to handling GPUs at the moment, and while they very clearly have a technical edge currently, in terms of making a smart business decission it truly appears that nVidia has clearly gone in the proper direction based on their financial reports and nothing else.

In terms of public perception of the geeks, nV may be getting its' @ss handed to it for the last six months. Real world market says that ATi is getting smacked around despite all of their technical advantages atm. 3dfx didn't die because they were that far behind on a technical basis, they died because they were poorly managed. Nvidia, based on their financials particularly considering what we know, is very clearly not.
