At this point if Nvidia wants to keep pursuing high wattage halo GPUs doggedly, they should make them external with their own PSU and include a riser cable that attaches to the PCIe slot through the vertical slot opening.

You never hear about data center cards based on the same dies having this problem. Maybe it costs closer to $10,000 to make a better connector.
Meh, most to the fault is the user. It really isn’t that hard to make sure the cables are properly plugged in. I have a 4090FE WITHOUT an ATX 3.0 PSU and did not have an issue. When you are talking 500+ watts, you really need to slow down and make sure you do everything right.

That's what all companies say when they hit the jackpot. Wait till they hit a pile of something else instead, so they suddenly remember we should all join hands and share the burden. In fact wait until you see the darling A.I. companies of U.S. receive taxpayer money to burn on expensive silicon from Nvidia and others. That's when the real chest dumping will begin, pumping demand with tax money is a beauty. Why lose money when you can have tax money

In the name of gamers everywhere, I would like to thank U.S. taxpayers for their future contribution to this barely sustainable chip-making business. Press F to pay respects.
That’s the American way, baby: privatize the gains, socialize the losses.

BuildZoid's reaction to DerBauer's video

I was actually thinking of getting a RTX 5090 for half-work half-hobby stuff, but I may have to rethink it all together.

How can they flop such an expensive product?

And how isn't this blowing up everywhere with complaints to regulators?

I remember the RX480 driving a bit more current than the spec (with zero victims AFAIR) and all of a sudden that was everything all reviewers could ever talk about.

From electrical security PoV (connector & PSU) the unified 12V plane is a design flaw, for sure. If you monitor each pin, you could at least detect bad connections (see Asus Astral) and potentially shut down the card if detected (or just staying in 2D mode, not a full shutdown).

But the very same connection problem could also happen at the GND pins, not only the 12V ones. So to have "full security" you need to monitor those as well but is suboptimal (you shift the GND level of the card a little compared to the motherboard and you need even more Shunt monitors).

With 3x 8p connectors it was unlikely that you connect all three wrongly at the same time. With just one connector you simply do not have that redundancy. Going from 270W (2080 Ti) to 350W (3090 with PSU shutdown problem) to 450W (3090Ti) / 450W (4090 with connector meltdowns and unified 12V plane) to 575W (5090) just makes problems worse and worse.
If you would limit the 12VHPWR connector to 300W, most problems would disappear. Install 2x of them for 600W. Even if one of both fails, you would have some connector redundancy.

How much of a concern are the ground pins? Wouldn't they carry practically no current, making them less of a burn risk? Also, if the live pins are all making good contact, then the ground pins probably are too.

The GND pins should carry more or less the exact same amount of current as the 12V pins Unless there is some current flow via the PCIe Slot GND connections.

8p had 3x 12V and 5x GND pins. There, GND was less critical because you had more pins on GND. 12p has 6x 12V and 6x GND.

Edit:
Maybe as an addition. The GND pins are often a little bit longer then other power pins. This should ensure GND connection reliability (connects first, disconnects last). Not sure if PCIe connectors are built this way, though. But if the case, GND pins should fail less often compared to the 12V pins.

Thanks for answering, so ground in this case is more like neutral is in an electrical outlet?

Correct, yes.

GND in DC systems is the reference plane / voltage potential and carries the return currents at the same time. It is not like "earth" in AC systems.

1.21 gigawatts? Nah, just 1600w power supplies and 134C wires... well 2 wires. Heck of a job there Leather Jacketman, heck of a job!

Jam those connectors in boys. Finger feels for flush fits only! Break out the magnifying glasses, triple check those cables! No more than 20 degree bends (break out the hair dryers if needed)! Also, need a dedicated A/C unit blowing on power cables.

(Bah, I've deleted like 3 starts at rants about the idiot power saving fanatics of the last ten plus years. At least we get free entertainment from this idiocy)

Not much point in overclocking for those meager gains. Planning to put a waterblock on the GPU?

The generally reliable Ming-Chi Kuo posted:
Supply issues will likely push back mass production of the RTX 5070/5060 from the original Feb/Mar to Mar/Apr. Limited supply means these two cards will sell out instantly even if production stays on schedule.

So it sounds like a paper launch even for the smallest parts.

I have not been keeping up; what supply issues are involved?
