My pointless boycott of overpriced 4090s was to get a 7900xtx. No real issues or regrets but I don't think I'll want to keep this for another generation because there are already a few games that will not run at the res/fps/settings that I want (>=4k/80+/ultra), and there will be many more in the next two years.

On the other side, I am not sure I want a 600w heater during the summer. 350w from the XTX is already noticeable. Are there any expectations on how well 5090 will undervolt?

Undervolt as planned but you can also set a TDP you're comfortable with (e.g. "nvidia-smi -pl 450") in summer and it'll still be the fastest GPU at that power limit.

Turn down ultra settings to high. They just hurt performance while having zero visual impact in 99% of games. Usually only a few settings cause all the slowdown.

I'm struggling to find anything the 4090 actually struggles with at 4K, except path tracing. Even then I can use scaling if I really want that.

Guessing right now this series will be a total scam on price/performance. 5080 for the same price as 4090 because it has the same performance for the most part, maybe a little faster at 1440p and 1080p, quite possibly a bit slower at 4K, for the same pricetag as 4090. They hold back the 5090 at launch to get more of these sold would be my guess. 5080 looks like a really disappointing card.

It has less VRAM. Can't be more than $1200 due to the RTX 4080S.
But since it exists to make the 5090 look like a deal the price doesn't really need to move units. So who knows.

Recent Unreal Engine 5 games pretty heavy at 4k, had to turn on DLSS Quality to get 100+ fps.

Just like all the 3000 owners that leaved nvidia for AMD for not having DLSS3.

The reality is that the 4000 owners will just upgrade to use the new nvidia tech as they do every genetarion.

If money were no object, I would get their 48GB power efficient enterprise Blackwell card rather than the crap consumer power hogging oversized 5090, showing Jensen's mentality that not only does money grow on trees but that we live in an alternate reality where everyone gets free electricity from the ionosphere.

It is actually irrelevant for me in the winter, since we heat with resistive electric heaters. It makes no difference if that heating comes from heaters, or gear.

Summer OTOH, it's doubly costly. You are now paying for power for the gear, and you have to pay for the extra cooling you need to counter it.

It will be 5 grand, at least, plus those versions usually less optimal for gaming - it's a real pity N3E not used for 5000 series, it would have been perfect for it...
