Have you even read anything about 3Dc compression?

From the impression I've gotten, 3Dc does NOT, and CANNOT, affect current games. Software must be designed to use it, and if you failed to notice, 3Dc appears to have signifigantly BETTER IQ than DXTC. Kinda like how 3dfx had a compression algorith im the T-Buffer.

I know nothing about that, but if it's true or has an effect, that would funny.

It's very nice... I can run Flight Simulator at 8XAA/8XAF and then switch to Far Cry at 2XAA/0XAF then switch to SoF2 at 4XAA/8XAF without changing a single thing =)

This all could be resolved when retail drivers are released and mature.

I don't mind downloading driver updates for every game I own so long as the driver doesn't ruin another game for each one it optimizes. I said it back when nVidia first was accused of "cheating" and I'll say it again. Driver optimization is a good thing... it helps me squeeze out every last bang for my buck.

Ah that's what he meant. Just like Max Payne 2. Yeah that does make a lot of sense now.

I just realised I get TRIPLE THE PERFORMANCE when I rename NOTEPAD.EXE to NOTPAD.EXE!!!

Oh well, it's not like this is a surprise. IMO taking away general app optimizations and claiming it's a cheat is dumb. It's cheating when the purpose of the app is to test the performance of a specific set of features.

Yup... then there's default settings which everything that doesn't have it's own profile uses... so... I could set the default settings at the very minimum, and set the application specific settings to the maximum... then show you a large increase in performance by renaming the .exe

It's looks better than DXTC.

Actually, I would rather they release frequent updates than have to stay with a problem for some months.

*if* they don't sacrifice image quality for framerate.

3Dc appears to have signifigantly BETTER IQ than DXTC
Keep in mind that 3dc is only for normal maps, not regular textures. So it doesn't fully supplant dx compression.

Yes I have read up about it and if "3Dc compression" is any good then I am sure that alot of current games will be patched to support it. As for your next comment, take a look here:-

3Dc compression doesn't lower IQ as much as DXTC but it does lower IQ imo!

Its also supposed to be in HL2. It remains to be seen what benefit it has, if any.

Indeed 3dc can actually increase IQ if one takes a highly complex normal map and compresses it to the size of a regular normal map. The performace would stay the same in this case but you would have a really nice normal map.

Oh so you'd rather not get extra performance for free because of these optimizations?

Maybe the card doesn't use shader 3.0 when the executable is renamed.

Given DirectX 9.0c isn't out yet there is no possible way it could be using SM 3.0.

Yep. And not enuff people realize this either.

actually you can DL the "beta" version of 9.0c
Perhaps; in any case not only is a beta version not a clear indicator but I also haven't seen any reviewer that used it.

I like to rename my game executables and hope the FPS drops also.
I just realised I get TRIPLE THE PERFORMANCE when I rename NOTEPAD.EXE to NOTPAD.EXE!!!
I'm not going to get into this but needless to say, you two are trivializing the issue and missing the bigger picture.

Nvidia is the Bill Clinton of graphics card companies. 'I did not have sexual relations with that woman'. 'I do not cheat in benchmarks, I optimize'.

you guys cant notice a differance in the IQ, otherwise you would have already stated it. but you do notice a FPS drop

HA HA! yes you are so right! And to further that, people will bash them on NV40 whether it effects their IQ or not, just like Bill was bashed when it didnt effect his job.

No, Bill Clinton kicked ass.

"He's just a man, it ain't reverend Clinton... it is just Bill Clinton. And a man is gonna be a man... and a man is basically as faithful as his options."

Bill Rules, Bush Drools.

No, I'm saying they shouldn't need to. Nvidia isn't releasing a optimization for Far Cry, more of a performance patch. Is every game developer writing their own DX9/Open GL code now? Or do they just make up their own language that completely ignores the Microsoft standard ? This in-turn making poor little Nvidia rework a driver update every time a patch is released for the game.

My sarcasm is laying on pretty thick right now. But let me make it clear right now I'm not accusing Nivida of cheating. I just don't understand why that they would have to keep releasing fixed drivers to make sure performance is up to par. They are not fixing bugs in their drivers they are fixing performance levels. Am I the only one suspicious about this?

Games are never made perfect and can ALWAYS use optimizations. That's all nvidia did was optomize the game better, like the game could have been in the first place. Hey have you ever read the release notes of EVERY ATI driver release? Every one has tons of game fixes. Shoot some ONLY have game fixes and optomizations. It doesn't mean the drivers were bad, perhaps (and probably) the game itself was broken in a sense (in that it wasn't as good as it should have been in the first place). So sadly instead of the game developer fixing their game it's left up to the video card companies. Now let up already, sheesh!
