I wonder how bad image quality will be effected when using ATI's new "3Dc compression", we could be having Quack style image quality all over again!

wait, don't the new drivers have a "game profile" tab where you can specify performance/color settings PER GAME? If farcry is in the game profile for the drivers and you rename the executable, what do you expect?
I know nothing about that, but if it's true or has an effect, that would funny.

Even if IQ is the same, I wouldn't like that Nvidia would be so depended on their drivers. I don't want to be downloading updates for Nvidia like I do security patches for Windows until it finally works.
This all could be resolved when retail drivers are released and mature.

Ah that's what he meant. Just like Max Payne 2. Yeah that does make a lot of sense now.

It's looks better than DXTC.I wonder how bad image quality will be effected when using ATI's new "3Dc compression", we could be having Quack style image quality all over again!
Actually, I would rather they release frequent updates than have to stay with a problem for some months.Even if IQ is the same, I wouldn't like that Nvidia would be so depended on their drivers. *if* they don't sacrifice image quality for framerate.Originally posted by: Jeff7181
Driver optimization is a good thing... it helps me squeeze out every last bang for my buck.
Keep in mind that 3dc is only for normal maps, not regular textures. So it doesn't fully supplant dx compression.3Dc appears to have signifigantly BETTER IQ than DXTC

Have you even read anything about 3Dc compression?
From the impression I've gotten, 3Dc does NOT, and CANNOT, affect current games. Software must be designed to use it, and if you failed to notice, 3Dc appears to have signifigantly BETTER IQ than DXTC. Kinda like how 3dfx had a compression algorith im the T-Buffer.

Oh so you'd rather not get extra performance for free because of these optimizations?Even if IQ is the same, I wouldn't like that Nvidia would be so depended on their drivers.
Perhaps; in any case not only is a beta version not a clear indicator but I also haven't seen any reviewer that used it.actually you can DL the "beta" version of 9.0c
I like to rename my game executables and hope the FPS drops also.
I'm not going to get into this but needless to say, you two are trivializing the issue and missing the bigger picture.I just realised I get TRIPLE THE PERFORMANCE when I rename NOTEPAD.EXE to NOTPAD.EXE!!!

sure the performance drops. but does IQ change?
