Nvidia Discontinuing the 7800's ??

I'm not sure if this article has been posted before. Take it with a grain of salt if you will. If this is true, that would mean the 7800gt had a shelf life of less than a year (correct me if I'm wrong).

Skepticism or not, it makes me reconsider going sli. I think jumping to a 7900gt (from a 7800gt) would be better in the long term, considering the price is very close.

Damn this market is so volatile.

The 7900 series is replacing the 7800 series, so it only makes sense that they'd stop making products that have been replaced.

I read that article last month as well, and I think its fairly accurate (at least makes sense to me). 7800's are more expensive for nvidia to make and as it stands now the 7800GTX has been entirely replaced by the 7900GT performance wise. There is a gap between the 7600GT and the 7900GT, where the 7800GT would fit in, but I still think they will go ahead and discontinue the G70.

If your going to go SLI wait another month, and try and pick one up used off FS/T. $200-$250 7800GT's would be nice for SLI.

In the end its in nvidia's best interest to transition to the .90nm manufacturing process, and that means killing the 7800 cards... it leaves people who want SLI stranded but that is the nature of the market, and one of the biggest arguments against SLI that most people do not take into account.

The manufacturing cost to produce a 7900s or 7800s video should be the same. However, the raw materials(G70 gpu) for the 7800s will cost more. Makes no sense for the manufacturers to produce a product that costs more to produce than a 7900s but have to charge less due to it's performance.

I agree with Twsmit, there would be a big gap between the 7600gt and the 7900gt. I thought that the purpose for the release of the g71 was to round out the whole line, which it did. but since nvidia is moving to the .90nm process, it does look like the g70s are on the way out.

7800's cost significantly more $$$ to produce, there made on the .11nm process and take up much more die space on a silicon wafer per core than a 7900 .90nm core.

Also have to remember nvidia is in a shooting war against ATI, 7900's are a response to the x1900 and nvidia needs to compete not only on performance but on price, and they cannot compete on price if they continue positioning .11nm chips for cheap. This is why the 7800GT had 4 pixel pipes and a vertex pipe disabled... it was a way to take poor 7800GTX cores and bringing them to market instead of throwing them away.


EDIT: Its also the reason we saw the 6600GT sit as the mid/low end card for nearly 2 years.. nvidia could not produce a competitive .11nm core that was cheap enough to produce... they had to wait for the 7600GT.

yes, but i dunno what the big deal is, it's had a longer shelf life than the x1800

When G80 arrives, hopefully in June/July, G71 will move to the midrange and G70 will have no reason to exist.

If all y'all think the 7800GT is overpriced now, check out pricewatch for X800 parts. The X800 variants are still hovering around $260-$300. The PCIe X800XT in particular ($270) is $100 more expensive than a PCIe X850XT ($160).

Just because a card is replaced by a lower priced, faster version doesn't mean it's going to drop in price. I wouldn't be shocked to see etailers who still have 7800GTs left over trying to get $350+ for them over the next few years while the 7900GTs are at $250 and lower.

Heck, there's still some etailers trying to get $220 for FX5950s. =)

Why good luck, i still have 2 years (well 21 months) left on my 7800gt, and after all i did not pay for it, replacement for dead 6800ultra, i couldn't really acre less if the 7800 are no longer avalable.

At least the 7800 lasted longer than the x1800's, if i bought one of those i would be seriously kicking myself at the release of x1900.

7800GT dropped another £10 within the last week in the UK.
Launch price was £258, now they're down to £182, with 7900GT at £230. 7600GT for reference is from £140 and up.
They're not dead yet, and they're not that bad in price either.

I wouldn't be too surprised if you find refurbished units going at around that price point. eVGA is going to have a few thousand 7800 series vid cards being returned to them in the coming weeks/months. They've gotta do something with them in order to make back some of the money they'll be spending on the Step Up program and they'll have to price them aggressively to move them out the door.

Also, since they will only accept them if they are in working condition and they would come with a 1-2 year warranty, it would be better than buying them from the FS/T forums.
