Anand did an article on that a while back, but now you can see it with your own eyes. Trust me, it's worth it
Click the little n on that flash animation. Password is "cg". Then click network and download the movie.

p.s. While you at it, look around the flash site with your mouse - you will find some weird stuff....

Man, gotta admit, nVidia's place sure looks nice, wouldn't mind working there, looking after all those SunFire's

My small brain cannot even to begin to fathom what they need all that computing power for.

You could crush a country like IRAQ with that much computing power!

"200GB of RAM" per sunfire!!!

If nvidia has that much computing power, I wonder what Intel, Sun, HP, Compaq, and AMD has.

For doing software simulations of the chips they're designing. They design a chip, then test it using software simulation of the chip's architecture.

It would be funny if you'd see little to none. The engineers could say, "We just design 'em, we don't use 'em!"

Actually if I remember right, the actual physical chip design is done with software also. I mean they design the stuff, but do you think a human could route the millions of connections inside a GPU or CPU. I believe they design what the GPU does and everything, but software actually designs the physical chip and where to place each transistor and connection. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

!!!!!!!!!!

I like towards the end when he's showing the new Datacenter that they're starting to populate:

1 wall will contain 4000 cpu's-- and there's 3 walls.

They have
19 Sun Serengetis which are 24 way cpu with 196 Gigs in each one. (I think that's what he said)
On the Linux side they have 2000 P4 2Ghz
Another farm of 800 2.4Ghz p4's in 4, 8ft racks. Each 1U has 4cpu's and 4GB of ram.
Didn't say how many of the older Sun 6500's they had.
90 Terabytes of storage which doesn't include the 70ft row of new storage they're adding.

Some jobs take six weeks to complete running completely in memory!?

All of this computing power and they still can't get new Linux drivers out

<boing>

I mean...

Uhmmm...

:Q

Goodness that's a lot of computing power! How much do each of those Serengeti or Sunfire rigs cost? Because there are a ton of them! I had no idea that nVidia was that well off. I knew they had a massive 'engine room' - but not nearly that massive!

haha, the frame counter probably be broken many times over (not true, since it probably has a limit like 999 frames or whatever )

No wonder they cost so much.
What goes on behind the seen is amazing.
It's the price we have to pay for new technology I guess.

At my school, we will be going on a field-trip to Nvidia in Feb. Hopefully NV30 will be out and maybe we will see neat things.

It is sure nice to go to live and go to school 10-minutes from Intel, AMD, Nvidia HQ!
