nVidia equivalent of r9 280x?

I was going to put an r9 280x in my new system I'm building, but with the f'ing litecoin miners they're impossible to get, and when they're in stock briefly they're going for 400 bucks. I was wondering, what's the nvidia equivalent? a GTX 770 ?

Don't pay the inflated price for a 280x. Purchase the 770 and don't look back.

The GTX 770 is roughly the gaming equivalent. You just have to decide whether you want 2gig or 4gig of vram. Depends on the rest of your specs (mainly resolution) and how long you plan on keeping it.

If it's >1080p or you want to keep it for more than ~1yr. I'd go the 4gig route. Even then, it might be pushing it. 2gig might only be good for another 6 months. Crystal ball is a little cloudy.

I dont think the 256bit bus can make use of the extra vram TBH, the 280x has a wide bus, so the extra vram on that is useful, NV 770, not so much.

670/680 just as good basically as the 770 without the premium if you OC.

Pick the cheapest custom GTX 770 you can found. Will be ok.

Chip-wise, a 770 is basically identical to a 680 ( http://www.anandtech.com/show/6994/nvidia-geforce-gtx-770-review ) but with 7Ghz ram. So, one or the other depending on sales/ebay/etc.

I'm in similar predicament as OP and Balla's advice here is what I honed in on when finding alternatives to the 280x.

Used 670's are going for ~200. EVGA FTW cards are great and hard to go wrong with Asus.
