Nvidia flat panel scaling + 7900GT

hey guys,

was reading this thread and decided to create my own.

I have a 7900GT and just got a Samsung 206BW widescreen LCD that runs natively at 1680x1050. I play BF2 and BF2142, and it doesn't have true widescreen support. You can force the resolution you want via the command line, but it's ugly.

I just now set the display options to Nvidia scaling with fixed aspect ratio, then started the game in 1280x1024.

I have the bars on the side, which is great. but it's stretching to fill the height by 26 pixels (taking 1024 and turning it into 1050, distorting a little).

how can I force it to 1280x1024 without it trying to stretch the height? with BF2's command line, you can force a resolution, but trying to force 1280x1050 doesn't work. i've edited the video.con files in both profiles, as well as the shortcut command line, and it just crashes to desktop when I start.

my goal is to have a perfect 1280x1024 image. is this possible?

even if it sits in the middle with black bars at the top and bottom - in addition to the sides - i'm OK with that.

'NVIDIA scaling with fixed aspect ratio' is supposed to preserve the game's aspect ratio while enlarging it to use as much of your monitor as possible - that is, it's probably making your game 1312x1050.

'Do not scale' would probably be the better option if you want it to display the actual resolution (leaving black bars on all sides). However, since I've been having problems with these functions myself, I can't guarantee that 'do not scale' will do what it's supposed to do. It's worth a try, though, I suppose.

I'm happy someone's getting good results from the scaling options. Kind of makes me wish I'd bought a 7-series card instead of an 8600... Scaling seems to work fine with the 7-series cards.

yeah I saw your reply in the other thread.. is it ALL 8 series having this problem, since it's a driver issue? i'm about to upgrade to a 8800GTS.. did you want to buy my 7900GT?

Well, I gather that all 8800 cards still have the scaling problem. Equinox said that scaling should work on the 8600 cards (ever since the 160.03 drivers), and it does, to an extent. It's just that, on my computer, I can't get 4:3 games to display at a proper 4:3 aspect ratio, for some reason I haven't figured out yet. Even when I choose 'do not scale', the card still squashes the game down to a 16:10 aspect ratio in the middle of my screen.

My 8600GT card actually works just fine for everything else - I just want to be able to do the same thing as you, and play 4:3 games at their actual pixel resolution without scaling.
