Nvidia has decided to change the marketing name of G92 (D8P) from GeForce 8700 GTS to GeForce 8800 GT instead. The 8800 GT card is 9-inch long, has 8-10 layer PCB and equipped with 1ns GDDR3 memories. There will be 2 SKUs; GeForce 8800 GT 256MB and GeForce 8800 GT 512MB priced at US$199 and US$249 respectively. The performance lies between GeForce 8600 GTS and 8800 GTS 640MB. However, knowing that RV670 is doing better than expected, Nvidia is now trying to bump up clock speed of G92 and may push forward its launch schedule to early November to be ahead of RV670. Hopefully for all those mainstream buyers out the this card will give a decent level of performance so that it can earn it's 8800 moniker. With a bit of luck nvidia will have got it right after the disappointing performance of the 8600 series.

That seems like a pretty wide gap. I'll have to see how the price, performance and overclocking potential pans out between the 2900Pro, 8800GTS 320 and 8800GT.

Hmm, $200 and $250 respectively. It's a tricky price point, because if the performance isn't up to scratch on the 512MB version people might pass over it altogether for the $270 GTS 320MB, or drop to the $200 version since like the two 8800GTS's, the extra ram doesn't actually benefit performance enough to warrant the price difference.

Bastards! See how they try to take advantage of the fact there is no new card in the 200-250 dollar range and milk the 8800GTS? I...I thought Nvidia cared about us...

It will be interesting to see how both these SKU's do in as they are supposed to be what everyone always wanted right?

This information is probably not released yet, but does anyone know if the 8800GT will have the HD decoding capabilities of the 8500/8600 series? I want my next video card upgrade to include decoding and if this card doesn't then I will feel better about my recent purchase of a 1900gt for $100. Right now, game performance is more important to me than HD decoding, so that's why I went with 1900gt over a 8600gt/gts.

I think the 1900gt can last me about a year or so until the DirectX 10.1 cards are out. Hopefully they can do AA/AF at high enough resolutions to be worth $250+ to me.

High framerates with AA/AF at high resolutions for DirectX 10 titles would be fine by me. I just figure 10.1 models will make their appearance sometime in 2008, but maybe not.
