I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 1070 for $430. Any opinions?

Wait for MSRP of $380? That is $50 over MSRP or 13% more than you should be paying.

I was dead set on waiting until the Volta/Navi generation comes before getting a new high end GPU but ehhh.... who knows. I'm still disappointed with RX480's performance and GTX 1070/1080 AIB pricing. I sold my GTX 980 a few months ago for $300(ish), and when overclocked kicks the crap out of even OC'd RX 480's. With my 1440p, I have no desire to downgrade in performance and I doubt OC'd GTX 1060 will keep up with OC'd GTX 980 at 1440p. :/

The only one I would get is the $399 model, won't pay over msrp because I won't support that.

But you can expect $30-40 extra for the customizations either way.

Ah, you should probably update the thread tag and OP then still says $379.

Actually plenty of people already bought Gigabyte/MSI models for $399 and one person in this thread grabbed an ASUS Strix for only $10 above MSRP. So it's a matter of time till entry models hit NVIDIA's MSRP with more stock.

Wait for MSRP of $380? That is $50 over MSRP or 13% more than you should be paying.

Why do you think all custom models should cost $379? Can we expect the same from the competition (customers shouldn't pay more than $239)?

I never said all models should be MSRP, but Nvidia specifically said months ago we'd see 1070 @ $379 and so why is saying someone should wait for that price bad?

Why won't you update the tag and OP to prevent confusion until we actually see $379 cards?

Implicitly, you did. You told another user he shouldn't buy a specific custom model, which is not the most basic GTX 1070 from Gigabyte, because it's above NVIDIA's MSRP. This card won't hit MSRP, but the other one I linked should (probably soon).

Why won't you update the tag and OP to prevent confusion until we actually see $379 cards?

Most people interested in a GTX 1070 and willing to spend north of $400 don't seem offended because of $10-30. I'll keep you updated regarding NVIDIA/AMD's partners pricing vs MSRP in the near future.

You (and I) should have snagged one of those MSI 980 Ti's that were going for ~$320 after rebate.

OC'ed it will compete with GTX 1070, even not OC'ed it will throw rocks at it, and for <~$150 well worth it. Would have been ~$50 out of pocket for you and a nice upgrade to your old GTX 980.

But that boat sailed, and I wish I at least hopped on to replace GF's GTX 780.

I picked up my MSI 1070 from Fry's today, which was their last sealed one in stock and it took a while to find that one. Yes I paid a over MSRP but they had it in stock and I've been out to long without a gaming machine.

Did the install and a quick run up and like it. This thing is whisper quiet and my case is open.

Well who's to say the current AIB cards/models are the ones that were supposed to be $379? I actually started another thread about this with little to no response...are the cards out now supposed to be $379 ones? I look at the gigabyte g1 and see it has more fans and a backplate, so maybe the pricing is justified. I mentioned I didn't mind spending an extra $50 but that partially depends on me assuming the $379 cards will have less features/cheaper design etc.

Also I don't see anywhere in the OP mentioning $379 ?

It's in the tags at the bottom.

The point is, you can't get one for $380 anywhere.

Gotcha. I honestly thought we'd see $379 cards by mid July but now I'm guessing it wont be for months and months when the launch hype has died down and cards arent as hard to get.

Also, its been awhile since I've bought a videocard. Do they only start to bundle games later into the generation cycle to entice purchases?

Edit: Im planning on buying via Amazon as I have $1700 in giftcards/store credit to burn...I noticed the Gigabyte WindForce model is selling for $549 on Amazon. The better G1 Gaming is $429..

There will never be a $379 card. You guys shouldn't hold your breath. Six months from now, when these cards start going on sale at newegg, then we'll see today's $400 cards going for $375 or so.

Nvidia engaged in a bit of marketing puffery. All they could promise was the $450 card they built, and Jen-Hsun obviously knew that when he promised otherwise.

Nvidia stock is up 20% since then, BTW.

I did the same thing... sort of. I just booted my machine after trying to install the 1070. Sadly, the 1070 is too big for my poor CM Scout case. I might take it back tomorrow and wait till I can pick up a new case.

Sad day...

Sorry to hear that man, that wouuld be a bummer after all the excitement leading up to it. There might eventually be a bright side, perhaps the pricing will be cheaper when you re-buy it.

Yes, I paid well over the MSRP but I'm happy and if people will pay, prices may stay up for a while.

I just did a 3dmark run. New numbers are impressive, almost double!
Real world games will be the true test.

My full review of the EVGA GTX 1070 SC is up, benching it against the 970, 980, and 980 Ti, stock and overclocked.

While its performance is pretty impressive, the power use is what really gets my attention. It uses far less power than a 970!

Maybe if they had any competition things would change...

So at its current pricing is this a worthwhile upgrade over a 290? I'm seriously considering one. I'm looking at the ftw edition from evga. My 4670k does not oveclock well so I don't know if ill run into any major bottlenecks.

It's 60% faster. Pretty good upgrade if you can afford it.

Note that FTW edition may not overclock better than any other edition, but it does have fancy RGB lights.
