Interesting, maybe I can wait until AIB models come out. Who knows when I'll be able to order one. In that time, I can update my board, CPU and memory while I wait.

In all seriousness, I expect the same. I'd like to wait and see real benchmarks for the 480 before I decide I want to spend the extra money on the 1070.

That's what I plan on doing and hopefully stock for both by the time I choose.

Good luck finding aftermarket 1070 for 380.If you look at 1080 most aftermarket cards cost same as FE or more.
MSI 1080 gaming X cost 750 or 800USD
Only evga with reference PCB cost less.

$599 1080 is 58% more expensive than a $379 1070 for 22% more performance at 1440p. 1080 is overpriced.

Overclocking will not let 1070 catch up to the 1080 this time since this is the most gimped x70 series card since the GTX470 but it's still plenty of performance for 1440p 60 Hz gaming and 1440p 100Hz from 1070 SLI setup to last 2 years until Volta.

NCIX Canada has a 1070 for pre-order. Looks like massive price gouging. $577 USD after tax, shipping is extra. Smells like shortages/paper launch all over again after the disastrous 1080 launch. At least this time there should be no chance for the 8-pin connector won't bottleneck the 1070's overclocking. At the $380-400 US mark though, EVGA ACX 3.0 basic card is still a way better deal than the 1080.

I don't care to use GimpWorks features and 1440p gaming doesn't need 4xMSAA in every game.

Your point is absolutely true that 1070 suffers on minimums compared to the 1080.

You can get a lot of performance by turning down useless features like maximum SSAO quality to Medium.

Once prices settle down, I'd rather pay extra for the 1070 SLI over 1080 anyway. Considering so many people bought $699 USD/699 Euro 1080, soon it should be possible to find $760-800 USD 1070 SLI that will smash 1080 in AAA games at 1440p. Well worth the wait to me.

Haha yeah. If only the masses were are intelligent as each individual. Vega is feasibly releasing late this year which should outperform 1080 so that is also an option.

Looks like I'll be getting one of those AIB models. I like what I'm seeing from the benchmarks so far. Might as well upgrade the rest of my rig now as it will be a while before I can get one for the real price.

Did you not read my quote? I said "in a more competitive market". That means in this hypothetical situation AMD would have had a larger Polaris or their Vega chip ready to rumble, forcing nVidia to release at lower prices and without that FE BS.

True, but I just have a bad feeling we are either going to see a repeat of Titan/780-> 780Ti milking or even more likely a price increase for the 1080Ti beyond $699. I mean NV is selling out of $699 FE 1080, do you expect them to price 1080Ti for anything below $799?

Also, let's say 980Ti's 2017 GP102 successor is $699-749, in 12-15 months GV104 2070 will match or beat it for $399-449. As I have been saying for a while now, we can't really win anymore. It seems the best strategy now is to buy -> sell in 10-12 months, buy again. This way you may lose $100-150 over that period and roll over the $ into a new 'flagship'. If we go Big chip upgrade strategy, by 2018, GV104 will wipe out $250-300 of 1080Ti's resale value. That means you'd still be losing $125-150/year using the same basis. So I guess we can either buy every 12 months or so, upgrade every next gen mid-range (iPhone 6 cycle), or upgrade every next gen flagship (iPhone 6S cycle). The only company that can change this is AMD with disruptive pricing such as launching a $499 card that beats the $699 1080.

I agree with you that the pricing in the GPU land is getting out of hand. It looks like $299 660Ti became a $379 1080 and a $499 680 became a $599-699 1080. AMD will probably surprise if more DX12 games start coming out because 1070 can barely beat Fury X under DX12.

Unlikely that either would be much cheaper right away - the chips facing off vs each other would still be the fastest chips out there, so they'd have quite high pricing from both sides.

I think you mean they'd be cheaper if they were still launching entire families of GPUs on top of each other Not happening, and I think you can see why - not easy building big chips on these nodes.

They may very well be down to roughly those prices in a year though once the big chips start appearing.

I really hope (against the odds) that some movement happens with asymmetrical DX12 multi-adapter tech. Some sort of quality and widely adopted middleware or something, so that it becomes possible to mitigate the 12 month churn they want to achieve, by reusing your old chip in conjunction with your new chip. I'm not holding my breath though

I don't get it. Everyone loved the 980 Ti with 25% more performance than the 980 for $100 more at 1440p, and yet the 1080 with 37% more performance than the 980 Ti at the same price at 1440p is stupid?

Max oc 980 vs max oc 980Ti is a bigger difference.

Max oc 1080 vs max oc 1070 is smaller difference than 37% not to mention 980Ti stock is slower than 1070 stock so that 37% isn't representive anyways.

And of course not to mention there is a $220 price difference between 1080 and 1070 not $100.

Well there's a little bit of a surprise. Water cooled GFX cards must be catching on a bit - MSI are doing a sea hawk version of the 1070. Maybe some other people will follow in.

Have to say I'm a bit unsure as to the purpose - the card is only 150w at base, and air coolers can cope with that sort of power load very, very easily.

BTW here's a custom Geforce GTX 980 Ti (Gigabyte XtremeGaming) at ~1500/2100 (core/memory):

Very similar result, and custom Geforce GTX 1070 can probably go above that.

For all the criticism this card got for having 1920 SPs and 256-bit GDDR5, it's performing very well.

The $450 is a big stinker though. Even the theoretical $380 leaves much to be desired in historical context compared to the $300 660 Ti 4 years ago. Of course, that card had the 7950 and 7870 to contend with, so first come first milk.

My math is not the best.... the 970 was 330$ and was a great deal correct?
If the 1070 61% faster as you say. At what price would make it an equal deal to the 330$ 970?
So 330$ + 61% =190$ ?
330$ +190$ (61%) =520$

450$ seems ok to me and 380$ is unbelievable for a 1070, especially with 2x the Vram @ 8gb, lower power usage ,and the added feature set of Pascal.
