Why are people considering $449 1070s good deals just because it can OC 10mhz faster than the ones that aren't?

Price doesn't dictate quality. $330 for my Asus ROG strix, can't beat that!

obviously not all of us wanted an Asus card.

I want see GTX1070M vs GTX1070 desktop benchmarks at same clock.
How much Mobile version will be faster. My bet is 10% faster than desktop.

i really hate Nv for doing this to us.They have 4xGPC 2048sp 1070 but they laugh at us and say:Forget it you will get only 3xGPC 1920xSP crap.Deal with it.

Got my FedEx tracking for the 1070. It should be here Saturday which is perfect.

Haven't had a new card in a long time. What programs/guides are recommended for overclocking or benches and monitoring?

The most popular tuning app is MSI Afterburner, but I believe EVGA's PrecisionX has been redesigned hand-in-hand with Nvidia to overclock Pascal-based cards, which operate quite differently than past generations with regard to clock speeds.

Use 3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Test #2 to test and break your overclock. It will cause a driver crash within seconds on an unstable overclock.

My 1070 is sitting in its box still unopened. I dont want to put it in my current/old system and get it "contaminated"

Waiting for my new system to put it into. hahah

I hope that card isn't DOA like mine was. Leaving stuff in the box for any significant length of time is risky for this reason.

Yea I'm going to go with the EVGA tool first and see how much it can overclock just for fun. I usually don't keep an overclock on them for games because I never felt like I needed it with my last card.

Been messing around with my EVGA 1070 and found it much easier to overclock with MSI Afterburner.

Laptopmedia.com just tested mobile GTX 1070 (85W). Really close to the desktop model:

Gaming benchmarks of the mobile GeForce GTX 1070 give us hope for 4K gaming on laptops

Tomb Raider 1080p Max
GTX 1070 mobile: 129 FPS
GTX 1070 desktop: 136 FPS

Hitman 1080p Max
GTX 1070 mobile: 75 FPS
GTX 1070 desktop: 80 FPS

GTA V 1080p Max
GTX 1070 mobile: 48 FPS
GTX 1070 desktop: 52 FPS

That's 980 TI speeds in a laptop at 85 watts! Holy sheeesh!

Edit: do you know for sure it is 85 watts?

The mobile version will be highly TDP constrained so the mobile version won't clock nearly as high, but I agree that its weird it has more active cores.

Mobile have one GPC more and that is HUUUUUGE.It should be way faster than desktop at same clock(and also have 6,6% more SP)
If you lose 1x GPC you lose all rops and raster engine.
GTX1070 can use only 48rops(no matter what they say yes it have 64rops, but those rops are not connected to anything in that disabled GPC) and is only able 3triangles/s.
Mobile version with 4x GPC can use almost all 64rops and can use one more raster engine so it have 4Triangles/s

Thats why i want see test Mobile vs desktop version at same clock. Its not that hard to do it.They need just downclock Desktop version and test it.

Just installed my GTX1070 FE card into my rig. I decided on the FE (was on a 10% discount at my local shop!) because blowers work well with my FT02 case whereas i've had problems in the past with open air cooled video cards due to heatpipes (even if they were oriented horizontally - also affected my CPU overclock due to heating the area around the CPU). Don't really have the time to experiment etc so FE i go. Would have bought the turbo if it was in stock as that supposedly has a custom PCB + blower cooler combo and being cheaper. But couldn't resist.

Anyway wow! quite a step up from my GTX780. I've been fiddling around with the fan curve and overclock (using heaven/valley as a guide - any want to suggest something else more modern?), some interesting observations were:

-Increasing power target and temp target increased my stock boost clocks.
-Default fan curve is really silent even at maximum 55%. Like if you raise the temp target to 92C, i don't think it will throttle unless the PC is badly ventilated.
-I found that a GPU offset of +175 (is my maximum)/Mem Offset of +400 (not sure, need a benchmark to fully load the memory) with default fan curve, I max out at 83C.
-Using my custom fan curve (27% - 30C // 55% - 70C // 65% max from 80C onwards) , I hit 75C. This is just a touch louder i.e. a little bit more of an air whooshing noise but not really whiney at all.
-Maximum boost clock seems game dependent as in valley i hit 2063MHz (avg of 2033MHz) and in heaven I only hit 2012MHz max (avg of 1950GHz).

Ill post some pictures later. Planning to play doom in the weekend so lets see how it goes. Tbh, there was alot of fear mongering with the cooler being crap and causing throttling. I ain't seeing anything like that. This thing behaves just like the cooler on the 780 but it cools much better due to a less demanding thermal load (250W vs 150W TDP).

I wish I had an excuse to buy a 1070 based gaming laptop. I don't game on the go and am perfectly content with my iGPU powered budget laptop, hah.

Wait for Lenovo to put on in a ThinkPad. Then you can justify it by citing the high quality keyboard. Your fingers get really achy on the other one, right??
