With my CPU limited system, when playing Doom on Ultra I average just over a 100 fps. I have a 60hz monitor. This suggests to me that until I upgrade my monitor that I am simply turning electricity to heat and unnecessarily stressing the CPU with the card producing more frames than the monitor can display. Is there a setting that will dial the card back to a target frame rate?

You can try vsync on and then it should lock at 60fps. If it doesn't work at the game level you can set it in the nvidia control panel. I can't remember if there is a frame lock in settings too.

I usually get around 120 fps or more but I'm using a mix of high/ultra settings. I think last time I tried all ultra it still wavered around 100 in some areas.

Let us know if you received an actual OC card, and not the standard card. I've been on the fence about ordering the same card...still can't decide if I need it or not.

EVGA FTW DT $386
ASUS Strix OC $390
MSI Seahawk $455

So I got the card today and the model number on the UPC is Strix-GTX1070-08G-Gaming which checks out as the OC card.

Check the clocks too. Base out of the box Strix OC is 1632MHz | 1835MHz with in-game being around 2GHz.

Those are the numbers I am seeing OC mode is 1835 according to GPU Tweak and boost clock is 2000 in game 2025 in Time Spy. The best thing about this card is in game it runs at the same temps my R9 390 would idle at (60C) amazing.

It seems everyone that has one of these cards is seeing in game boost clocks of over 2GHz without touching anything. Also, minus the EVGA Hybrid and MSI Seahawk, this is the coolest running GTX 1070. Many cards don't even seen anything past 62-63c. It's really impressive. ASUS deserves major props for this card.

Out of curiosity, which card would you guys pick; and why?

ASUS GTX 1070 STRIX OC $390
MSI GTX 1070 SEA HAWK $420

Yea I'm also impressed with the asus card, probably should have checked it out too. Although I did see my boost clock got to 1900+ at one point on mine. I still need to continue overclocking it to get it's final memory and GPU clock numbers.

A fan curve profile also helps a a lot too. During benching now it does not get higher than 59c but the EVGA precision xoc app has a crappy UI for the fan stuff.

Edit: To answer the question above, unless the msi had some unique special features available I would pick the strix and just OC it yourself.

If I was buying again I would still go with my ftw though because the build quality is like a tank and it's very quiet.

The FTW IMO is the best card for overclocking. Being that it has 10 GPU phases on an overbuilt PCB, so once modded BIOSes are released, you'll be able to load one on your 2nd BIOS chip and have fun. I know EVGA is very conservative with their fan speeds. They value low fan noise over temps. The FTW cooler is amazing, so with the right custom fan curve it could compete with the STRIX.

I forgot about the dual bios. That's an easy process assuming someone already tested custom bios scripts. I think tonite I'm going to try and reach my overclock limits if I have time.

What's the best tool to use for that? I'm now using heaven on custom settings, full screen native resolution, extreme tesselation and ultra detail. Doesn't seem like I see any artifacts yet. My firestrike benchmark stopped working so I uninstalled it.

I personally use MSI AB with RTSS, along with the Heaven benchmark. I run Heaven maxed out in a 1080p Window, and while running it, I adjust the clock speeds in real time. I use RTSS OSD to monitor temps. voltages, clock speeds, etc... Once I've found my max clocks, I run Heaven in full screen for 30 min, then play a couple of games as well. I've found instability with my GTX 970 after playing Fallout 4 for an hour or so. So i can take so time to find it.

BTW, I haven't been able to get Firestrike to work at all...I have the steam version and it won't even start.

I see, I like to set clocks one by one and keep notes on them as I don't have a whole day to sit there and watch it go through all the scenes. Hopefully I'll find them by the end of this weekend.

I'll most likely not even use the OC in games but I just want to see what it's potential is, since that's part of the fun.

For some reason Dell always takes a while to ship stuff, well you will enjoy it.

Actually they went out of stock as soon as I ordered it back at the beginning of the month. Looks like they're not even stocking the founder's edition anymore so this might be their last batch.

my microcenter has been getting returned 1070s, and after open box discount some are in the $350 range.

part of me says "hey, that's a good deal"
another part says "but someone probably returned it because it wasn't a good overclocker" (not that i overclock, but buying something that may have been ridden hard and put away wet isn't my cup of tea)
and another says "that'd still be a lot more than you've spent on a graphics card in the last 10 years"

what to do, what to do...

also just got some OG 8GB 480s back in stock at $249. kinda wish i'd jumped on the returned ones at $200 and started mining. also, RX470 pricing is nuts.

I must have the dud of FTW cards. Overboost to 1912mhz out of the box and gets into the 70s when running fullout. At least it looks pretty.

Mine boosts to 1960's so not that much better. Doesn't stay there too much either. Mine gets to 58c while benching and around 64C in overwatch.

I'll need to check boost while gaming this was all under heaven.

The max boost on my FTW seems to change with the benchmark or game. Heaven and 3DMark were in the 80s. The Witcher 3 hit 2000. Dues Ex hovers around 2012.
