<< hmm...no one has even made a game that reallly taxes the geforce 3 on a good system...hehe crap games like aquanox don't count in my book >>

I think Max Payne at 1600x1200 or Ghost Recon at the same would tax even a Geforce3... My poor Geforce2 Ultra can't even hack 1200x1600!

Yeah, I will be waiting for the GeForce4's (and maybe the next-gen ATi cards) before upgrading. I currently have an All-In-Wonder Radeon (I love the multimedia features), so it can handle the duties for a while. I was thinking about getting an overclockable GeFroce3 Ti200, but not now. Then again, nVidia will bring out the GeForce4 "Platinum" or "Ultra" in the fall...can't wait forever.

okay this is getting off topic but why Nvida is comming out with more and more variations of these card can be explained using a simple theory.
Bascially you want to cover the field by having various different variants to cater to the quite differing tastes of the consumer. You can think of Nvida as say Kellogg or any cereal maker. You don't just make a healthy cereal or a sugary cereal. this would not be wise as a business you want to sell to the WHOLE population not just one segment of the population. Therefore you see these cereal makers make various different types of cereal. I think Nvdia is doing the same thing just having a vase product line to cater to all the different taste out there...

my 2cents.

You can sortof compare the new GeForce 4 lineup of cards with Intel or AMD's strategy. Look at the Athlon XP/Pentium 4 and the Duron/Celeron, multiple processors with varying clock speeds. The 3 different flavors of GeForce 4 and 3 different flavors of GeForce 4 MX are more or less the same cores (The GeForce 4 and GeForce 4 MX may not be the same cores however) just running at varying degrees of speed. If you think about it like that then 3 High end cards, and 3 Low end cards doesn't sound like too much compared to Intel and AMD.

<< doesn't look like a misprint, Solutions4SURE and tech depot have the same price too. >>

Those three merchants are all the same company.

This would be awesome, but I clicked on the link and it said the product was not available or could not be found. Must have been a mistake.

does the "Geforce4" MX even have a programmable t&l engine? i think this is more of a gf2 with a better memory controller. the programmable t&l eats so much logic that they wouldn't have very high margins on the chips. also, it is NV17. we know the mobile version doesn't have programmable t&l.

Just so you guys know, the GeForce 4 is expected to be out on Feb. 5th. The top-of-the-line GF4 carries 128 MB DDR RAM and is 8X AGP compatable.

The new Radeon is following close behind, with a possible edge: the new Radeon will support DirectX 9. The GF4 doesn't support that - yet. NVidia is really good with updating their drivers, so it shouldn't be long.

There's a story on zdnet about it.

Just so you guys know.

THE GEFORCE 4 MX DOES NOT REPEAT *DOES NOT* USE THE SAME CORE AS THE REGULAR GF4.

The GF4MX uses the NV17 core, with is basically a hyper-enchanced GF3 core. It is NOT a GF4, which uses the NV25 core. I think Anandtech had an article about what the GF4MX is, check the front page of Anandtech.com or something.

Having their products' performance overlapping (eg: certain GF4 slower than certain GF3) will confuse the hell out of the consumers. Not everyone's like AT folks who know which is which.

Meanwhile, good old Punamo is still trying to figure out how to optimize his Voodoo2 (yes, that's 3Dfx if you still remember).

Good thing various Java editions don't require faster 3D cards, or I'd be spending tons of money just for running java HellowWorld!!!!

now that i think about it, the GF2 Ultra is probably the most wise investment that someone coulda made a couple years ago. If you think about it, it has proved its longevity with damn good performance in every game to date.

I agree with punamo... the cost and performance variations between the gf2-gf4 are way wack. You can get a high performance gf2 that would be faster and about the same price as a gf4?!?!?! Wut the heck is up with that!?!? Kinda weak for NVidia to plan it like that, if they even did plan it...

I built my first computer early last year and made a few bad choices. I guess I'll wait until the full geforce4 is released before I replace this rage XL I got in here!
