Nvidia GP102 Titan coming soon

Despite AMD is telling the world that the $649.99 Geforce 1080 is too expensive, Nvidia partners insist they can sell as many cards as Nvidia can supply. Now there is a faster version coming, based on GP102 even bigger graphics chip. We don’t have many details about GP102 other than it is fast enough for Nvidia to call it Titan. There is a chance that there will be a Geforce GTX 1080 Ti branding but our sources are telling us that Titan is more likely.

Boutique vendors including Origin PC, Maingear, Falcon Northwest, Velocity micro and a few others tell us they cannot get enough of the high end cards, as this is what their customers want. Now with the fade out of the original Titan and the fact that Geforce GTX 1080 is faster than the original Titan card, there is a space for a new card.

We expect that the card will sell for $999 and people are willing to pay for it. Our sources are confident that this is a really big chip, much bigger than the GP104 with its 314 square mm and yet smaller than gigantic GP100 used for Pascal supercomputer cards. This is a bigger Pascal based chip, manufactured using TSMC's 16nm FinFET process with more Cuda cores enabled compared to the GP104 and Geforce GTX 1080.

This is not a HBM 2.0 card, as far as we know, the card will use GDDR5X memory. If it does even a bit better than the Geforce 1080, which was the most successful high end selling product in more than a decade, then Nvidia will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Except the Amazon "Top Selling" list is somewhat of a lie. Yes sales are used in the algorithm, but its not based entirely on them. There is also a lot of averaging and prediction in the algorithm.

So in the case of cards that have been out for a year or so, their sales numbers have long since plateaued. Meanwhile the 1080 and 1070 are brand new, and do not have an a year long average holding them down. So really if their first day sales are better than the long standing averages for other cards, they will easily go up to the top. Even though total sales could be significantly lower than every other card on the market.

Man, I would love to see GP102 ship this fall. I don't think they'll knock the 1080 off its perch quite so quickly, but it would be great to have a 50% larger 1080 to really give a big generational upgrade to high end users.

Hopefully they keep to the $1000 Titan price, but given what they're charging for P100 and Intel's recent pricing for Broadwell-E, I'm kind of expecting nVidia to look to enthusiasts as a source of some nice margin padding.

But the claim is that the cards are in very short supply. They can't be at the top of hourly updated sales lists, and be in very short supply, I don't think.

I think they are probably simply selling like ice cream in hell whenever stock arrives.

Plus, there is a different "hot new releases" list. The top 20 are entirely 1080 and 1070 cards, with two exceptions, a recently released AMD 360 card and a 950 card.

I posted this back when it was brought up just after the 1080 launch, but the Amazon best sellers is extremely weird. The #1 card back then wasn't even released and EVGA wasn't selling preorders on Amazon.

How can the 1080 hold the top 4 best seller spots at Amazon for graphics cards then? One of which is a FE card?

I can't see how that's possibly accurate. The best seller is the EVGA FTW card that hasn't been released yet, and the only people selling it are two guys reselling pre-orders they bought.

Nope. Titan drops to get the people who have to have it now, and then after a while the Ti comes.

Amazon's top list is not a good measurement at all because their algorithm for getting stuff to the top is proprietary and arcane. They purposefully keep it hidden to try and stop people gaming the system. I've heard some really weird stuff about what improves your ranking in that list. It's a little like SEO where some tricks can put you higher than you ought to be.

Keeping in mind the list isn't meant to be a summary of success -- its a tool to drive more sales.

The algorithm changes depending on the item category as well. Below are just a couple easy to find links on how to game Amazon features to some degree. Note: it looks like grouping sales into a short time frame = higher on best seller list, perhaps even if your total numbers are lower.

All you can really deduce from an amazon best selling listing is that its at least selling to some minimum level, whatever that minimum is for the product category.
