Is there a reason you want Nvidia?
2 x R9 290 used or new will get you way above the performance of the GTX 760 (and little above the performance of the GTX 970) especially at the resolution you want to play.
To power 3x 1920x1200 to do what? Games? Or less-difficult tasks?
Games. I don't play bf4 competitively, but I'd like to max dragon age, far cry 4, etc.
5760x1080 testing is the closest to your setup. Best value are after-market 290s for $500-550, 2nd best value is 970s for $660-700 or 290Xs, and finally for only 12-14% more performance 980s for $1100-1200.

Since NV cards cost less where you live, 970 SLI. 760SLI is not good enough for such gaming in modern titles you listed.
A single card for non-gaming usage is perfectly fine. Thanks RS. In that case, would it be crazy to pick up a single 980 now, and use it to drive all three monitors for regular usage (no games), only gaming on the center monitor at 1920x1200, and then add another 980 after prices fall to game on all three? Or will the single card still struggle at 5760x1200 for non-gaming use?
If not, 2x970 (maybe Asus Strix) would be possible as well for slightly more than a single 980 right now, but I can't find them in stock anywhere except at ridiculously inflated prices.

Heck, I have an old 6950 in the office running :
(1600x1200) + (1920x1200) + (1600x1200) + (1200x1600)
Thanks. I'm leaning towards 2x970 right now, but that won't happen unless stock is replenished in the next week or so.
No plans for 4k any time soon. Is there any other reason why the wider bus on the 290s would be better than 970s?
Any other reason? What was the first reason?
I'd go with 2x GTX970's.
850w enough power for 2x970 with rest of gear in first sig rig?
In a blind test I'm sure you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them.

$250 vs. $350 for very similar experience seems like a very very solid reason to go with a 290.
"I can get good prices on Nvidia, not AMD, and haven't used AMD in more than ten years. But if everyone agrees that's the way to go I'd consider it."
First of all, 970 should be compared with 290X, not 290.

And short of used miners, I don't think you'll find a 290X for 250.00. maybe 299.00 AR and who knows how much where the OP is.
Much closer. Trades blows before we get into power consumption and heat.
Second of all, the quote above by the OP. Depends on what he can get the Nvidia or AMD cards for. You know my personal preference. I'd pay more for the better cards.
Is 850W enough for 2x290? It's about $200 less expensive for those than the 970s now on Newegg. I usually get Nvidia a lot cheaper, but my source for that discount is out of stock at the moment, so I'm considering Newegg pricing. That has me considering 290s, but I'm not sure I have enough power.
What does AMD's website say?
Looks like the difference under load is about 70w. If that's true for both cards that's an extra 140w, which is gonna be pushing it.
I grabbed a 970, and will likely grab a second shortly.

Max settings at 5760x1200 won't be happening with 2x970s. Even with 2x980s. Not sure about Far Cry 4 but BF4 and DA:I you can't max unless you are ok with frequent dips to around 30fps.
