I have a SeaSonic bronze 850W power supply powering a 3790, 16GB RAM, 1SSD, 1HDD, 4 120mm case fans, 2x reference 290's running eyefinity 5760x1200. Under heavy gaming loads (BF4 Multiplayer) my wattmeter shows around 600-700W.

Taking into account efficiency loss there is some room left for some mild overclocking with a similar power supply but if running a more power hungry processor it could be cutting it close.

I also have an Asus 970 Strix and it uses *much* less wattage than the 290 under load so an 850W supply should be plenty of power for an SLI setup.

you should be ok - the amd cpu is a pig that slurps as much juice as the 290

This. As long as you're using intel CPU, you should be able to easily get under that 850 mark. It's using the FX8350+290CF and the fact that they are ALL overvolted that puts him so high. If you aren't going to do that, chances are you're more than fine.

You should be concerning yourself with Madpacket's results as that's closest to your own....
Why you'd worry about a person using an FX-8350 when you have the consumption results of essentially your own rig is beyond me.

I'm looking at all the results I can. Madpacket is using an AMD CPU as well, and only tested one 970. But overall, everyone's info is informative and confirms what most of the reviews are saying about 970 TDP.

Thanks, that's exactly my concern. I'm hoping that with 2x970 and OC'ed 2500k I can sneak under that mark.

You don't have to be under 850 watts -from the wall- on a 850 watt PSU unless you have some magical 100% efficient PSU.

850W PSU for 290X CF is a cake walk. No really. I'll explain why:

If you are taking 100% CPU load + 100% peak GPU load of 1x 290 and doubling it, you are doing it wrong. What game will 100% load all 3 components? There is no such scenario in gaming.

The extremely power hungry Core i7 4930K @ 4.7Ghz and dual 290Xs uses about 650W.

But do you know that i7 4930-4960 system overclocked uses nearly 2X the power of an overclocked i5/i7?

Most professional sites show that an overclocked i5/i7 system with a single 290X hits about 380-410W, and in a dual setup, you are at 650-670W, nowhere near 850W.

A Corsair HX850 is a true 850W PSU.

If I was purchasing right now, I honestly wouldn't be able to get myself to buy dual 970s for $660-700 when I could just buy Sapphire Tri-X 290s for $500 and a $185 * SanDisk Extreme Pro (2nd best SSD after 850Pro) 480GB as an OS upgrade. I would rather take a massive fast SSD upgrade and lose 5-10% GPU performance for a similar amount of $.

*The SandDisk Extreme Pro is $210 on Newegg but right now you get $25 off with Visa Checkout, making it $185.

FWIW, I am using 3 1920x1200 panels to play games with a Geforce GTX 680 SLI setup. From the recent reviews, a single GTX 970/980 is about twice as fast as a single GTX 680, so at minimum you're gonna want a single 970 or 980. This is to play "older games", stuff like Far Cry 3, Saint's Row 4, Skyrim (with "ooh shiny" mods), and so on.

If you haven't already bought the three monitors, might I suggest getting a single larger screen (something like this lovely thing?) Nvidia surround on SLI has proven to be a PAIN IN THE BUTT for me. Switching it on and off is irritating, and using Windows desktop with it on is irritating. Don't get me wrong - the panoramic view is amazing - but convincing games to work seems to take longer than the time I have available to ACTUALLY PLAY GAMES nowadays.

EDIT: As far as power supplies go, I am absolutely fine on an overclocked Core i7-2600k - 4.4 GHz turbo, no overvolting - with the 2x GTX 680s and a high quality Corsair (made by Seasonic, I think?) 750 watt supply. 970/980s use less power.

That's because FX8350 @ 4.8ghz overclocked is a power hog. Even at stock, it's a power hungry CPU.

850W at the wall means 765W at the PSU level with 90% efficiency. Therefore you do not actually need an 850W PSU.

Thanks RS. As usual, you have enlightened me. I already ordered a STRIX 970, but I'm considering sending it back and replacing with 290.

You could try PowerColor PCS+ 290 for $210 after rebate. There is also a $25 off with Visa Checkout coupon NAFVC25 at Newegg by November 30th. Since the PowerColor rebate is only good for 1 household, see if a friend/relative can order the other one for you and send in the rebate.

If this goes through, you'll walk out with $210-$25 = $185 for the 1st card and $210 for the 2nd card but 2 game coupons. Sell 1-2 game coupons and get even more savings or redeem the games. Since Asus Strix alone is $350, buying a 2nd one will cost you $325 with the Visa checkout. With the deal I linked to you, it'll cost you $395 vs. $675 for the dual 970s. Now you'll have $280 saved towards your future GPU upgrade that will net you A LOT more than 5-10% performance difference.

Correct and I mentioned that in my earlier post, but just pointing out that its possible to pull that much with that setup. While its only using less than 800 from the psu itself, an 850 would be still cutting it close for long term.......

anyway - OP should be using an intel cpu with that setup anyway. FX was a fun novelty to futz around with but can't be recommended for gaming especially with multi-gpu setup.
