No it is not some April Fool jokes. VR-Zone has learned that there will be two high end parts from Nvidia to replace the current GeForce 9800 GX2 and 9800 GTX in Q3. These two parts are GeForce 9900 GTX and GeForce 9900 GT based on the new GT200 architecture. GeForce 9800 GX2 and GTX will have a short lifespan since they will be replaced in a couple of months time. Nvidia has positioned GeForce 9900 GTX to replace 9800 GX2 and this gave a clue that a single GT200 card will actually outperform a dual G92 card. Likewise for GeForce 9900 GT, outperforming and replacing 9800 GTX. CJ revealed to us that Nvidia will have a hard time fitting GT200 onto the PCB since the GPU is gonna be large and very power hungry so we can probably assume it is still 65nm based. The PCB for GT200 will be P651.

After they went 65nm, their product naming has been quite unfriendly. Either they are having MAJOR problems figuring out a good name for 10800GTX so they slow down the naming pace, or their intention is to confuse buyers so that buyers can not easily find out what is overpriced and what is new tech among the cards.

Thanks for hunting these news though, it's always fun to read these stories while planning to buy a new product in the future.

So if I planned to buy an 8800GTS 512mb today should I wait a few weeks for the prices to drop further? Oh the never ending madness of waiting

The waiting game will never bring you anything good. If you have the money, just go for it. You won't regret it. All the time there is something cheaper and better right around the corner, but if you wait for it you won't get nothing after all.

Buy the GTS today and when the 9900 GTX or how it's called, you can sell your 8800 and buy the better card, and so on.

My right side asks my left side a question each time I click the Submit Order button. The conversation goes...

"When does it end?"
"It never ends."

So instead of refreshing the 8800's to 8900's they went and named it the 9800 and then for the refresh of that card is a WHOLE new architecture which is the 9900. What is going on? We've had YEARS of refresh cards having the first digit or 2 being the corresponding number to the architecture and the upgrades are the rest of the digits, and now nVidia is giving a refresh a whole new architecture?!?!?

The card names are all screwed up these days. First we had ATI going from 2xxx to 3xxx for a minor refresh, then Nvidia releasing a refresh card with the same name as an existing one (8800GTS), followed by the current 9 series that uses the same GPUs as the refreshed 8 series.

They should just shorten the name to 10KGT/GTS/GTX

I'm sure they could get a lot of marketing out of 10K.

Stop the madness. Buy what you need today, use it for a while, sell it when you need something better.

I have been on an x1900gt for about 18 months now and have just begun to feel a bit slowed down in the games I play. Today I snapped up a Palit 9600GT ($125 after MIR) and will probably use it for the next 12 months or so (plenty of time for nVidia to figure out what they are going to launch next).

These are just rumors... for all I know, the gt200 may be delayed until Nov 2008, and will be named a 101110100gtx. But the good news is the Crysis hype is over, and $200 will buy you a card that will breeze through any other game.

We're technotwins... except mine was a 7800gtx I'd had for 24months.

A $200 card will breeze through Crysis as well .. just don't turn antialiasing on. It's really not as bad as people think.

I've been on my ATI 800GTO2 flashed bios and overclocked to X850XT PE levels since mid 2005 now and I'm starting to feel the crunch when I attempt to play Crysis which it will barely do at low settings and some tweaking...I think it just doesn't like my overclock for some reason because I've read a few posts from Google searches of people telling how Crysis didn't play well when their card was overclocked.

I ordered my EVGA 8800GTS today and I'm guessing that it'll drop price tomorrow since that seems to be the general rule for most people

it defies logic

Heh, two completely contrasting rumors on this. The only thing they agree on is the 9900 name, which is odd, since you would think Nvidia would be doing all they can to distinguish this line from their existing cards.

July is Q3...so there is no contrast there

Amen. My 8800GT plays Crysis on almost all high settings, so I don't see what the big deal is. But really, Nvidia needs to shrink the die size again. Not everyone has 40A on the 12V rail.

isn't September also part of Q3? So assuming the rumors are accurate, it could be released as late as the end of September.

I don't understand how people are so surprised by the this "announcement". I'm sure, like most companies, once Nvidia finishes developing the product and RTM it, they immediately start on the next one. Actually, they probably had the specficiations for the next card figured out months ago, but it takes much time to plan on the manufacturing and costs. What do you think, the guys at Nvidia release a new chipset and then sit around on their asses playing games for a couple months until they start working on a new product? Companies that have that attitude don't last.

As it is with everything that comes out, no point to speculate or grieve over your latest purchases. These days, technology is moving at such at fast rate, it can drive one mad trying to keep up with it. As many have mentioned, if you got the money and it is your hobby, make the decision for yourself and don't worry about other opinions.
