if only nvidia will finish up the hybrid power supporting intel chipsets, then you could get an intel CPU + nvidia 280gtx (or 2 or 3 of those) and have them take 0 watts while idle (Cause they will be off, completely)

Yay for pics and some specs...cant wait for some benchmarks.

I'm just hoping the release of these will further decline the price of the G92's.....cause I will NOT be spending 600+ on a card.

Sweet new pics! Few things I noticed were the cards were fully shrouded with a backplate for the RAM. Glad to see them on the reference cooler since they weren't included in the CAD renders and the GTX 200s will have RAM modules on the back. Lessens the need for after-market heatsinks like Thermalrights backside cooler or paying a premium for specialty coolers like EVGA's AKIMBO.

Can't wait for benches though, I'll be interested in seeing how close the GTX 260 is to the GTX 280 considering the $200 difference in price. Also will be interested in seeing how much they overclock and whether its worth it or not to wait for OC variants from different vendors. But I'm definitely looking forward to playing through a few titles again with one of these in my rig (lookin at Crysis, amongst others ).

what about 9600GT? It is essentially still a generation beyond 7 series and doesn't it outperform the 7900GTX?

their crappy naming scheme ruined that. 8600gts is crap compared to 7900gtx, and that is the "next gen" card to compare it to.

Sweet looking card. I wonder if the shroud is plastic or metal. Imagine this thing custom painted. My cousin paints professionally. Hmm..

It looks metal like the GX2. They've really taken the completely enshrouded card thing and ran with it. I'm sure companies like EVGA, BFG, and XFX love that, since it gives them a big 'canvas' for their branding stickers.

I'm a little disppointed that it looks like only the 8-pin plug lights up like the GX2. I wasn't too keen on the white plugs, until I found out they illuminated red/green to indicate power status, now I kind of think mixing illuminated/non-illuminated looks a little ghetto. Having the plugs light up is a great way to verify ample power quickly.

edit: it actually looks like neither of them light up... http://www.vr-zone.com/article...Z_Screenshot/5828.html having them be different colors AND not light up is really kinda ghetto for a $650 card IMO.

I wouldn't take the price/availability stuff too seriously. Nvidia pr always does this a couple of weeks before a launch. They exaggerate their weaker features than... They soften you up and pretty soon at $500, you will think it's sooo cheap you best buy quick.

Looks like nv has a potential winner here

Yeah, it looks like the GTX 280 is going to easily be the fastest single GPU ever made. But I'd be shocked if it launched at $500. Maybe the 4870X2 might drop the price a bit when its launched.

Yes I am, but then again I'm actually going to have to pay for my own GTX 280, so I might be tad bit more critical.

Now the question is, will the next generation of cards be led by Nvidia or ATI?

It's looking like it'll be nVidia until ATi get their X2 variant out.

I wonder what kind of oc's we can expect. Stock clocks seems pretty modest. What are the factors again? I've seen people talk more about the die size and other stuff than with previous GPUs.

OCing high end video cards like the GTX280 is largely pointless.

Read any review of a top tier factory OCd card and the differences in performance would not be noticeable without the frame counter on.

A poor trade for higher heat, possibly voiding your warranty, and possibly damaging a very expensive card.

My philosophy on OCing is it's best used to make cheap parts work like expensive ones (Q6600@3GHz = QX6850@stock 3GHz), not (GTX280@10% OC = 85fps vs 80fps)

It always surprises me even more when "OCs better" is tossed out as a reason to buy another part that still performs much worse OCd.

People need to re-think why they OC and want to.
